Power-on password on hp 8510p

Power On Password & Hard Disk Password
With your next laptop you should protect it with a Power On Password AND put a password on your hard disk. This will stop anyone from using your laptop and if they move the hard disk from your laptop to another laptop they cannot access the data on your hard disk with the hard disk password.
BUT you need to write down or remember these passwords; if you lose or forget them you cannot gain access to your laptop.
There are no backdoor passwords to remove these passwords.
To set up or change these passwords, go to the BIOS configuration - then security configuration. http://techtips.salon.com/reset-hp-laptop-bios-password-1476.html

Have a think pad 600 type 2645 with eo301 error, there is a display of a padlock w/ no1 and a blinking cursor on the top left corner

This laptop is protected with a Power on Password.
The password is setup from the BIOS configuration.
There is no backdoor password available and you need the password to boot up the laptop. Once you can boot up the laptop you can enter the BIOS configuration to remove the Power on password.
Removing the BIOS battery to restore the factory defaults will not remove the password because the password is stored on an EEPROM chip.

Friend Locked out of her laptop.

What make/model of computer?  What operating system? What BIOS type/version/revision?

There IS a way to reset it without losing the data on the drive. It sounds like he has set up a password in the system BIOS or either password protected an entire volume in Win 200x/Vista.

If he has set a BIOS pw, you can remove the batteries and jumper the CMOS reset pin for a few seconds...IF you can get to it.  If you can determine the BIOS name/version, I can probably put you onto a boot diskette that will clear the BIOS.

For 3 bucks, I'll send the boyfriend a virus!!!   lol
