Here is one possible solution. Some devices require that you use the USB cable that came with the device. Other USB cords won't work. This happened on a Nexus tablet I bought recently. When I tried to charge it with another USB cord, nothing happened. I had to use the exact USB cord that came with the tablet, even though both cords looked identical.
The type of cord you are looking for is a USB to mini usb cord. You can most likely find one one sale on Amazon or in a local shop like Radioshack or Staples. Cheers!
Did the light ever come on, or is this a new drive? How old is the system? (It appears to require a power cord for USB 1.1, but not 2.0.) If it worked in the past, as long as you have the same type of connectors (A, B, mini) on the cord ends, any USB cord should work. Just swap it out.
try to replace the ubs cord, dont be afraid of opening the mic because wires are color-coded unsolder each wire then solder the same color from the other usb cord
make sure that your computer recognized your usb first, if not try to put your usb cord in other usb slot of your computer, and make sure your usb cord is properly working.
It will never say it doesn't recognize a USB cord. A USB cord is just that--a piece of wire. It might tell you that it can't find the printer. Has the printer worked before? If you are installing it for the first time, did you install the software before plugging in the printer? If you have done all these things, then either the USB port is bad or the printer is. But--try uninstalling the printer first--and any software that came with it. Then reinstall the software and plug in the printer. While I did mention that the cord is just a piece of wire, it is possible that the cord has become damaged in some way. Try using a different cord. Also, try using a different USB port.
