Battery indicator light comes on above idle RPM, gauges start fluctuating.

The first thing you need to know is what the alternator output is when this starts happening.
It could be a faulty connection in the wiring harness, or a bad ground connection, or a failing alternator.

dont think this is a battery cable problem but more like the igntion switch on the back of the steering lock ,try taking the shroud off and then use a meter to find the feed and then turn ignition on as the dash lights work then jump it across from the feed to the starter wire connection and if it works then you know you need to change the electrical switch .easy when you apply some logic

Dome light wont turn off. have to disconect the battery cable while it's unatended so it doesn't drain the battery.

Didn't list the year or model or car or truck or even the engine size or country it was sold new in. ( laws are different countries ) the cars and trucks are made with some differentes. the dome light can stayon because the dome switch is on. The headlight switch can be turned all the way or the dash gauges dimmer can be turned all the way up, On some model years you can turn it all the way down and the dome ligh will be out even with the door open. Some models don't turn off this way and you'll have to find the door switch thats not working. Sometimes going around and slamming each door will find the bad one as it'll blink the light or it might even start working again. If the car or truck has a hatch or trunk theirs a switch on some of them too the vans and suvs all do. The switches on some yaers ( current model till late 80's) the switch is incorperated into the door latch itself. Their hard to get too and it requires taking the inside door panel off to get to the latch and then some latches have to be removed to get to the switch thats screwed ( 1/4 turn) inti the side of the latch. The drivers door sets and resets sereravl things so just unplugging it won;t work. Removing the dome light fuse will fix it too but some radio functions might not work on certain models as the cruise control. Everythings intertwined, How much so depends on the year ands model.

Lights dim and radio cuts out for a second when applying brakes - intermittenly. I can hear a slight high pitched noise.Yesterday on the freeway when I applied the brakes, the speedometer and tach went...

My degree is in electronics and I would be somewhat skeptical with that explanation. Define main relay? The relay has to control some electronic device like the dome light or turn signals. When the lights and radio cut out it sounds like a short circuit but that should have definitely blown a fuse. It is unlikely that it is an intermittent short and which is not fused because the insulation would quickly burn off the wires and start smoking. Therefore, I believe it would be more of an open circuit and would first check the battery for good clean connections. Next I would check the ground wire from the battery connection to the engine block and vehicle chassis.

CLock, radio, dome lights, speedometer, keyless entry dont work

Check fuse 8 (10 amp fuse) in the under dash fuse panel. Make sure you have voltage to it on both sides of the fuse. This fuse feeds all of the items you listed.

Instrument Cluster Problem

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had the same problems you describe.

I cured it by removing part of the dashboard and cleaning/checking all electrical connections.

Any black leads that connect to the metalwork .. they are earth wires. Check them for corrosion and as they are usually just held in place by a screw - undo that screw and retighten it. A 'bad earth' can cause the problems you describe.
