Question about Maxtor One Touch (RBAY080B0USR) Hard Drive
Hard Drive was working fine until today - no changes. I have a Maxtor 200GB One Touch. When I try to access the drive, I get the following error: L:/ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I have tried a different USB cable and tried other USB ports and got the same result. Any help is appreciated.
My Maxtor died like this. The disk was OK, it was the electronics that blew. I bought a new empty disk drive box and fitted the disk drive and fixed it. Years later the disk still works in the replacement box and power supply. I got my files and data back with the disk drive in the new box. The size of that disk looks small today. It may be Parallel (PATA) and you need a PATA box, that is harder to find as obsolete. You need to try the disk first in another drive holder.
So PATA and SATA??? Look here and read up about it with pictures too:
An external disk unit has three main parts.
1. The disk drive.
2. The electronics box.
3. The power supply.

- Do you hear any beep sound when you plug in the USB drive into the laptop? - You can also try a different USB cable - Try connecting the hard drive to a different computer and see if it works All those steps will help you determine where the issue is. Please revert back with any other observations. Good Luck

Most of the time when you get error messages like this it is due too drivers. Now in order to determine this issue I need to know what type of computer you have, OS installed on it, how old the PC etc. Please advise!

I have seen this one before. You need to reinstall the Maxtor software and reset the encryption - if you do not have CD you can get the software online at:

John, try this link and see if it is indeed and newer version than what you currently have: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Retrospect_Express_HD_Update_for_Maxtor_OneTouch-FR&vgnextoid=f0ce8b9c4a8ff010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
Hope this works out.

How to open the enclosure
You will need a long flat piece of metal.
On the sides of the enclosure are small slits.
If you look in the slits diagonally you will see a metal tab.
Slide the metal tabs about 1/4" towards the ends of the case. (there are 4 slides one on each corner)
The case will now open freely.
