I have a Sony DHC MDX10 that won't recognise that there's a CD in the tray. I hear 'whirring' noises from inside, but eventually the player gives up and signifies that there's no disc present.
I've tried using a lens cleaning CD, but no luck.
For info, this happens 99% of the time when trying to play a disc, but very occasionally the player will recognise the disc and play.
Any ideas?

Remove the unit and take a look inside the trays as there may be a CD that is jamming the tray as it may not be lying flat on it. Be care not to jar the unit too much as they are very sensitive and shouldn't be moved without tightening the screw that holds everything from moving during transport.
There usually is a tiny hole at the front of the tray that you can push in a straightened paper clip and it will manually open the tray.
hello it sound like the output transistor could be the problem also check any capacitors for swelling and any dry joints round the transistor good luck
Digital transfers are only possible from the host pc/Mac to the player
and not the other way around. but you can transfer the audio signal by
connecting the headphone output to the Mac audio input; look into the
Minidisc player menu and on some models you can set the headphone socket to "line"
which bypasses the volume control circuits for better quality.
i have the same model and it too 'went silent'. it turned out to be apart of the powering mechinism for the internal amplifier. once replaced, it worked like new!! hope this helps.
