Check to see if you formatted the card as some cards are sold not formatted and some require it to be formatted in the camera before use. Check your manual.

Is the camera able to use a 1gb card? Use the Camera Setup Menu to Format the Memory Card. Use camera Setup menu to tell the camera to use the Memory card instead of the Internal memory.

All cameras need a memory card of some description. A 1GB SD card would be more than big enough from any photographic shop. Make sure that the lock switch on the side of the SD card is not set.
I've had similar problems with other cameras. The problem is not the camera, however, it is the sim card. If you remove the sim card and place it in the card reader on the computer, the contacts on the card eventually wear out. What it sounds like is that your new pics were not saved to the card due to poor contact. If this is the case, unfortunately, nothing is recoverable as nothing was saved. A possible short term fix is to remove the sim card and scrub the contacts with a pencil eraser. A long term solution is to get a new sim card and leave it in the camera and transfer pics using a USB connection from the camera to your computer. I hope this helps.
the d40's do not have this capability. the lcd is for reviewing the pics on your mem card and for menu options. i was disapointed when i found this out too but it is a great camera.
before unplugging any usb device from the computer... it is best to safely remove before unplugging the device...
i used to just unplug before i lost over 200 pics. was able to recover using recovery software but the whole process took about 3 hours to do. since using safe remove.. not a single loss
some pros suggest formatting the card on regular basis to also clean the card of file fragments... but once card is formatted, the pics are not recoverable... be careful
That message is probably because you have not saved any images in the camera's internal memory. Whatever pictures you took are on the SD card. Try taking a couple of pics using the SD card and try the review. If you are able to review, then all is well. If you cannot review, then one of 2 things: 1. Faulty SD card..Replace or format it. 2. Remove the SD card and take a pic. The pic will be saved in the camera's internal memory. If you still cant preview, probably a fault with the camera, and you'll need to service it.
