You will need the model number to find this info. Usually on a plate or sticker under the seat. The use a parts site like jackssmallengines.com or simply Google your make and model followed by "deck belt"

Your owner's manual should have a diagram.

Sounds like you had to change the belt because their is too much resistance in the shafts that the blades are attached to. This may be from grass. Anyway, that is where I would check, to make sure everything turns freely when not connected to the belt .

You will find the diagram on the left side of the deck as you sit on tractor by left foot. It will be located under the foot pedal that has the routing diagram specifically for your Troy-Bilt mower model. Note that owner's manuals may not have the most current schematic.

check on or around the cutting deck [where belt is found]; most mowers have the belt layout stamped on the metal... if not than possibly a sticker [since this is a standard user function].
