I purchased a discover wonderwall entertainment projector - when I play movies on it the picture is VERY dark - you can really see faces that well in some scenes. how can I make it get a better picture?

The wonderwall does NOT have the proper inputs for use with a computer for good reason.
A wonderwall projector is NOT a projector that is good enough to be used for movies or games and it would be embarrassing to make a presentation on one. It has WAY less resolution than even old fashioned standard definition TV. Standard def Tv is 720x 480 pixels at 30 cycles. A wonderwall is 480x 240 pixels which is appx. the resolution of a screen on your phone. That's 345,600 for STANDARD def versus only 115,200 pixels for a wonderwall. When you blow that up to 3 feet wide, it'll look pretty mediocre. We have one just like it and we use it to project VHS onto our garage during Halloween and Christmas.
It IS perfect for fun and might be ok to watch old VHS tapes but watching a dvd on one is horrible.
Your 1440 has VGA outputs. A wonderwall has AV (red, white yellow) inputs. You can buy a vga to AV adapter for less than 10 dollars almost anywhere. You don't even need to go to a specialty electronics store.

make sure the ground (earth) is good. make sure there are no obstructions in the fan (paper, labels, packing peanuts, styrofoam, etc.). you may need to replace the fan itself.
