You will know if your (specific) unit comes with a free life-time map update if it says so on the retail box that it comes in. Usually there is an "M" ... indicating free Map updates. A "T" indicates free Traffic (info) updates.
Otherwise, you can register the unit (on the TomTom website), and use the TomTom HOME software .... to find out. When you connect the unit to your computer running the TT HOME software, it will automatically tell you if/when you have updates ... including any free map updates

Only firmware , GPS fix and map shared correction are free, everything else as in maps, safety cameras will cost

go to the manufacturer's website to get the software update, if you want to update the map you can buy it from there also, or get the map update from a torrent file.

you should download a new one, for your region, to change it and put in the navigator. and, for the future, every time before you make some changes, save all the content in one folder on your pc.

The only FREE updates are minor ones from the mapshare or speed cams etc.

full map updates are not FREE and must be bought from TOMTOM

The supply of illegal maps or such information from FixYa may result in the suspension of experts involved.

as per the TomTom N14644 manual, it is usable in US and Canada, just have to have the right maps loaded to it.

I do some work with TomTom - it's possible that if something interrupted or went wrong during the install, the map could have been deleted. TomTom is aware of the problem and is working to fix it - if you are map-less, call support (866 486 6866) and we can work on getting you a new map.

There are free downloads / updates of tomtom firmware from the tomtom home site but as far as I know there are no free updates for maps. The firmware updates can be performed using tomtom home software that came with your tomtom or by going to http://www.tomtom.com/plus/service.php?ID=17

You will need to connect your tomtom to your PC via USB and have the SD card in as the update will perform updating of certain files on the card.

The update will allow better function and enable faster fixes on satellite's and also iron out any reported bugs that have become known to tomtom so its well worth doing.

Map updates for your TomTom GPS can be purchased and installed through the TomTom HOME GPS manager program. You will need to download and install the TomTom HOME software onto your computer.
