Xp can only "See" a hard drive up to about 128GB, if its bigger than that, XP won't install.

Make sure your drive is properly connected, and jumper in the right place (1 drive, set to master)
If it used to work before your problem, should be ok.

Then boot from your windows disk. If your bios is set to boot from the hard drive, if there's no operating system on your hard drive it can't boot.

If its set to boot from the hard drive first, it may, after a few seconds revert to booting from the disk drive. If not, while booting watch the screen, at the bottom it you should see "Press F2 for setup or F10 for boot options" or something similar. To temporarily change the settings, choose the boot options menu and select "Boot from CD". Restart and you should be on your way.

If that doesn't work, you may need a new hard drive.

Yu possibly have a virus
You will need to format the hard drive and reload Windows if this doesn't work you will need a new hard drive.
Try to "defragment the hard drive 1st. check the disk for errors.

How do I recover my administrator password?

Hi, man. Don’t worry, there are many people forget their admin password or lost it, and there is a popular solution for those who have been locked out by computer. For this solution, what you need is a second computer that can connect to Internet and then freely download Windows Password Recovery 6.0 at http://www.recoverlostpassword.com/products/windowspasswordrecoery.html With it, you can create a reset CD which can be used to reset Windows admin password without erasing anything.

Fresh vista install won't take and laptop acts all goofy

seems like a hardware problem...Hard Disk Probably.but don't take chances...first remove any external hardware attached [usb, printer etc.remove the battery also]then try to install the OS use another CD or you can even use Windows XP.Make sure you change the SATA setting in the BIOS for XP. You did not mention the error message or when does it hangs while installing Vista.Try changing the Hard Disk.If there's still problem then it's your motherboard. As far as overheating is concerned you need to see how long does it remain powered on.And when you switch it on again does it turns off quicker than before. Take it to the service center.

If you can install Windows Vista and only XP not work for sure this is the solution :
SATA operation mode is AHCI
To change this :
Open BIOS
Look for SATA Operation Mode or somethin equivalent and change-it to IDE or Compatibility Mode.

That happens because the BIOS uses a SATA controller that is not included in Windows XP install disk.

Usually you can solve the problem going to BIOS settings and changing SATA/RAID settings.Check your BIOS settings, and disable SATA RAID mode. This is done in different ways depending on the BIOS.

On HP/Compaq computers for example you press F2 on startup to enter BIOS, then disable SATA mode on bios settings.
On other makes the procedure can be slightly different.

Another way to fix the problem, is by creating your own XP setup disk with SATA drivers included, see:

Installing windows without DVD

The hard disk is not recognized from USB because of SATA drivers not present on XP setup disk.
