Is the 1Gb RAM you purchase the same make and speed as the original? If not, they may not be compatible with each other or the new RAM module may be faulty.
Try removing the RAM from slot 1 and insert the new 1Gb RAM module in slot and boot up your laptop to test the new 1GB RAM module.
Installing a single 2Gb RAM module should work.

I want to upgrade to windows 7 but I need 896mb of ram

I'd leave that computer with the version of Windows it came with:
from the HP website:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00835809&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3340210#N321

  • Single-channel memory architecture
  • 2 x 240-pin DIMM sockets
  • Supports PC2-3200 (400 MHz), PC-4200 (533 MHz) DDR2 DIMMs
  • non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
  • Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 2 GB

You can see that the max memory is limited to 2GB which will probably work, but I'd still just get a new computer which will come with Windows 7, usually for free.

Hello Sir, I had 512 MB 533 MHz DDR2 RAM(Dynet). Now I have bought 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 RAM(Dynet). My system has 2 slots. In one slot, I have 512 MB RAM and in another slot, I installed 1 GB RAM that I have...

The Intel D102GGC2 uses a Dual Channel Memory Architecture meaning that both slots need to be running at the same speeds. I would suggest getting another 667 MHz RAM card and installing it along side your current one, just as I reminder this motherboard only supports 2GB RAM Max so don't get one that is above 1GB.

INSTALLED NEW RAM UPGRADE TO BOOST FROM 1G TO 2G COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE NEW RAM STILL SHOWS 1G.

Make sure it is the correct ram for your computer. If you just added one ram chip then try swapping them and make sure they have a tight fit.

To test the new chip replace the old one with it and turn on your machine. If it doesn't see it then it is either bad or not the correct one.

Let me know how it goes.

Does not see added memory, but I know memory is ok because I changed slots.

How much memory did you put in? Try changing the position of the memory.. In other words take out the memory and put the new memory in the old slot first. Let me know.

Have a compaq presario sr2170nx....installed 1 gb memory but not showing up. swapped the memory sticks positions and restarted but still wont show up.

If you do not get the right memory for your computer it will not work. the memory you need is listed in the table below. And pay attention to the max amount of ram. Your system can only hold 2 gig and it comes with one gig installed

Component Attributes Memory Installed 1 GB Maximum allowed 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) Speed supported PC2-4200 MB/sec Type 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM
