The agitator seems loose on my Maytag top loading machine.. model LAT9206BAE it started this after one of my kids overloaded the machine.. works fine but makes a loud clanging noise while washing.. almost feels like its loose and will come out... is there a way to tighten it back down as it seems to lift up a little now.

Use a 1/4 inch nut driver to tighten the set screw to the agitator shaft. It is about 3 inches up from the bottom of the agitator on the side of the agitator.

There is no filter. You may have something that is hung up under the agitator. To remove the agitator, remove the fabric softener cup, then the bolt that holds the agitator on and lift the agitator out.
HI. this is usually caused by a faulty drive assembly(agitator gear components and clutch malfunction).
I recommend replacing the agitator components by purchasing a Agitator replacement kit. and, replace the clutch assembly as well. this will fix this issue.
You have a bad lid switch. You can buy these very cheap at your local dealer. Sometimes you can just bypass them if you have no kids in the house that will open the door while its running. Good luck!!
Look toward the bottom end of the agitator. There should be a small indentation where a 10mm screw is. This screw holds the agitator the the transmission shaft. Sometimes the screw works loose and needs to be tightened.
the agitator shaft has come loose from the transmission. when you pushed it back down it probably didn't seat properly, thats why the grinding sound. you need a new transmission
