Normally it doesn't need 'programming' as that function is already there. Normally

Item 1 = $2
Item 2 = $2.50
"that is four fifty please"
customer hands $10 bill
enter 10.00 - Press Cash (sometimes Sub Total) Key
Display shows $5.50 and cash drawer opens
Put $10 in and give customer $5.50

Some Till have an 'AMT TND' (amount tendered) button.

You have programmed your Cash button as 2 cents. Turn the key to program and enter 00000000 hit your Cash key then subtotal. Turn back and you should be good to go.

Ask the person who supplied it for the information. Or alternatively contact NEC for the reset information. Or search for a user manual online for it.

Try pushing the drawer in just slightly as you operate the open register key and see if the latch releases. If this fails then you will need to contact a repair shop and have it fixed..

What do you mean by "operate it"? What is the exact error message on the display?

I don't have this particular cash register, But I took a look at the manual and I recommend the following:

A. Turn the cash register off.

B. Unplug it.

C. Remove the batteries.

D. Wait at least five minutes.

E. Initialize the cash register. This procedure was copied from thwe manual:

In order to operate the cash register properly, you must initialize it before operating for the first time. Follow this
procedure.

1. Insert the manager (MA) key into the mode switch and turn it to the REG position.

2. Insert the plug of the AC power cord into the AC outlet. The buzzer will sound
three times.

IMPORTANT: This operation must be performed without batteries installed.

3. The cash register has now been initialized. The register display will show
"0.00" and then “NO BATTERY”.

If the buzzer does not sound when the plug is inserted, the initialization has not been done
successfully. (This will occur when the voltage is high because you operated the cash register
before starting initialization.) Wait at least one minute after pulling out the plug and insert the plug
again.

Sorry. Far too old. No connectivity whatsoever for this model. It was a very low end register.
