Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. There are a couple of things that may work. Depending on if you have the old style brushroll you can upgrade to a new style Oreck brushroll that has twice the brushes and will a work a lot smoother. Also, clean the bottom plate – get rid of any dust and dirt build up and then spray the bottom with silicone and let it dry after you have totally cleaned it. Always use Oreck genuine belts and to change the belt every 4 to 6 months for the best cleaning and store the extra Oreck belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator, other wise if you have a new belt, gag, you have checked for clogs there is no reason why it should be hard to push, if the silicone does not work replace the bottom plate.

Why is my oreck xl 21 hard to push on carpet?

sometimes the little rubber wheels in front wear out of round and bind. Try those first (if they're the tiny ones you must buy a pack of 20 from oreck directly) and Orecks are known for being hard to push when bag begins to fill up.

Suction problem

Probably have a clog some where in the base and that is what causes it to throw stuff back out.

My Oreck XL vacuum does not have enough suction to pick up dirt. Any suggestions to remedy this problem? The belt is strong, the bag is not full, and there do not seem to be any obstructions.

Turn the machine on and be sure the bag expands quickly and fully like a balloon. If the bag does not fill with air, or is soft, there is probably an obstruction inside the handle tube or fan housing. Disassemble the handle to check for blockage, or remove the bottom plate to check the inlet to the motor fan.

I have an oreck xl and the vaccum wont hardly push. Is it the belt? The brushes aren't turning when I lay it on it side. How do you replace the belt? If you can give detailed instructions I would so...

On the side of the head you'll see a removable plate with one screw. Remove the screw and slide the plate towards the front until it's off. You'll see the belt.

My Oreck XL 9100HA started smoking (white smoke) when I vacuumed. There is a burning rubber smell. How do I check/change (if appropriate) the belt? I have no User manual, nor can I locate one on the Oreck...

It sounds like the belt has been damaged. You can get another belt from yoru local Oreck store. You can even take it in to the store to show them what happened. Purchase another belt and replace it. (It was very easy when I did this, so hopefully the belt is all you'll need too.)

Best of luck!

My Oreck XL was working fine, then when I vacuumed a shag rug is started smoking and smelled like something is burning. (I changed the bag, checked for clogs--none found, and roller brush is turning. It...

Even though the brush is spinning, the belt is probably worn out and stretched. when you vacuum the shag carpet, it puts more drag on the brush. try running it on a shorter carpet or hard floor for a few minutes. if it doesn't smoke, then you know it's your belt. if it does smoke, then it's probably the motor burning up.

Oreck won't pick up dirt.

Check the roller brush, dust channel and then the back spine tubes - two parts which also holds the cloth bag - which holds it at the bottom via a spring. Unhook this, and prise up the rubber rings that hide the push in locks. Push the locks in and the spines should separate. You may need to undo the power cord since it comes out the top near the handle at the bottom. Check both spines and remove clogs with a thin round stick. Put everything back together slowly and switch on.

Oreck xl

Sounds like the Oreck is clogged. You'll have to undo the bag by the way of the clip in the middle at the back of the main black spindel neck and then at the bottom. Then take apart the main neck by pushing the rubber mounts upwards to release the pip fitting locks and holes. You should find that either the top of the neck or the bottom - where the dust channel feeder is located - is clogged. Either that or there may be a clog in the main dust channel after the roller brush or wedged into the fan unit itself - the Oreck XL is a dirty fan system which means clogged dirt can often get stuck between the dirt and the dirt channel.

Oreck Vacuum Cleaner problem (upright)

The best solution to any Oreck vacuum problem is to replace it with another brand. You are going to continue having problems with the Oreck..Not that other brands don't have problems. But, at least with
other brands the problems don't occur as often. Belt burning up. clogs, roller brush bristle wearing down prematurely, cord breaking internally, etc.
P.S. Oreck is good at one thing. Marketing!
