Hi! The touch screen on my Garmin nuvi 660 is not working. On boot up I can't get past the reminder to update map data screen. I have updated the unit software and tried to recalibrate the screen. As is the unit is unusable. Your thoughts/recommendations will be appreciated. Thank you Brad

You need to plug in your Nuvi into your computer, once connected go to www.MyGarmin.com

It will then seek your Nuvi model and ask if you like to update maps or update firmware.

I would update firmware first.

Hi Vicki, unless your nuvi was first activated and acquired satellite lock in the last 60 days (unlikely as yours was discontinued a long while ago) then you cannot get free map updates, sorry.

For models activated within the last 60 days Garmin offer a free update to the latest maps if the maps already on the product when it was purchased are an older version. After that, all updats must be paid for.

You simply won't find free map updates legally. Accurate maps cost a fortune to produce and update so nobody gives them away, even the few illegal downloads tend not to work and if they do work are likely to be out of date anyway.

The way that Garmin price their map updates, it's often better to simply buy a new Garmin with the maps pre-installed, although I appreciate that's not the answer you hoped for. If you do buy Garmin updates then you can either go for a one-off update, or for additional cost can buy a lifetime update, but it's limited to the lifetime of the device which is only designed to last three years anyway so may be poor value if you buy the lifetime update and your machine then dies of wear or old age.

I just got a Garmin Nuvi 660 and cannot figure out how to charge the unit. Help!!!!

You can get a 1 time update for around $50 at www.garmin.com or 4 updates a year for around $100.
Walmart carries the one time update.

It depends on how the files were corrupted. If the source of the corruption is not physical or magnetic damage to the memory chip where the software is stored, you should be able to reinstall the operating system software and the new maps right from your own PC.

First I would recommend going to the Nuvi 660 page in the Garmin website, look for the link to "downloads and updates", and download the most recent software update. The update is free.

Once you have done that, try reinstalling your maps. You can only load Garmin maps into your Nuvi.

If you are in the US and your memory storage is not damaged, I can update your GPS and install the map for you if you prefer.

Did you contact Garmin tech support? They are pretty good at it.

Fixed. Called Garmin. It seems that version 4.90 FW on the Nuvi 350 (which came shipped on my 350) has a bug where it cannot communicate with the Garmin software either to update maps or update FW. Tech from Garmin e-mailed me a patch that I copied into the Garmin folder on the Nuvi itself, via USB and Windows Explorer. I then rebooted it; the patch installed itself which then allowed the unit to communicate with the map upgrade software and all is well. 2009 map update is now installed and the Nuvi is working fine again. Haven't tried upgrading to newer FW yet; will probably leave well enough alone.

Have you updated the software since you purchased the unit? If not, go to Garmin's site, download WebUpdater and check to see if there is an update to the unit's software. If so, download this and see if it helps. If not, try downloading the same version of the software again. This might help also.
