Mine make a grinding noise also when the wash cycle starts. I had a repair guy over fixing my fridge and he said it was the washer motor. My machine has only been in use for 1-2 yrs. Other owners say that the tabs on the top rack break off and get lodged in the machine. hope this helps a little.
Little plastic nubs from the rack fall into the drain pump, the pump will grind on them for a few seconds before they are pushed into the tube. Once the drain turns off, they fall back into the pump to start this again. They can be removed from the pump simply by removing the pump and shaking them out.
Mine makes this noise if the kitchen gets too cold. The drainage line gets plugged with ice chips because the area behind the unit is not heated. This may also be the case if food gets in the line.
