About a year ago my LG LRFD 23850TT French door refrigerator froze up and started sending the defrost water into the freezer section and filling the bottom of the freezer with ice. I got it thawed out everything has been fine for about a year but now here I am again with the defrost drain tube froze up again. What a hassle, there has to be something wrong here, any clue why this is happening again?

That's the way it works ;-(

you should defrost your frig every 6-12 months.
look here for a fix if you don;t do that.
Have fun

This time I removed the back wall of freezer compartment, it took a little doing but I got it out. As expected the pan and drain was full of ice. Removed the ice from the pan and ran boiling water down the drain. before I closed it up I took a piece of aluminium wire an hooked it on the heating element and ran it down the drain. Hopefully that will keep it from freezing solid again.

I have to say that I am 57 years old and have had plenty of refrigerators and this is the first one that has done this. I have had to replace a few defrost timers in the past and I can understand that, this one I don't. It has to be a mfg defect. Maybe they need a larger slope in the drain pan or they need to run the heat element a few more minutes...... LG, not sure I'll ever buy another one.

    Thanks for the link.

great, I'm glad you solved it.
remember, every 6-12 months -> defrost it ! (or open it when ice gets to the fan....)
    enjoy

Install a silicone tip drain line heater available at most good Appliance Parts Stores.

Your suggestion makes sense as a solution but I am more concerned with getting to the core of the problem. This was an expensive refrigerator and should not be freezing up and sending water into the freezer compartment. This is the first self defrosting frig that I ever had a problem like this with except when the defrost timer failed.

Most likely there is a restriction blocking the water from properly daining. Such as dirt or algee the water cannot drain, and freeezes up.

The bottom of my lg french door bottom freezer freezer has a layer of ice

Hi, The defrost drain is plugged. UNPLUG the refrigerator. Remove the rear inside panel in the freezer section and locates the drain hole below the evaporator coils. You will have to melt the ice in the drain hole and flush it out with hot water.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
