We have a Lionel 80-watt train transformer (Model #6-14198 - comes with the Polar Express O-gauge train set) which is whiring rythmically; almost sounds like it is moaning. I would guess there is a cooling fan of some type inside and it might need lubrication since it sounds like a bearing trying to seize up. However, I can't open the case - it has some type of recessed screm heads that take a triangular bit, which I've never seen. Does anyone know how to get the case open and what the problem might be? The unit is the second one in just 6 years - the original one went bad in the second year and these have only been used at Christmas time!

This transformer is difficult to open unless you have the triangular security screw driver. Security bits can be purchased at any Harbor Freight tool store but you will need to adapt them to fit into the channels where the screws are recessed. Click on the link below to view the correct tool needed to correctly open this unit up:

Contact Lionel customer service for help. You probably need a replacement unit. If you could get the transformer open you'd have a very hard time getting a replacement fan.

My transformer on my new polar express does not work what am i doing wrong

No power to the transformer or to the track?
If not to the track, make sure you have the correct wire connections made from the transformer to track.
If no power to the transformer from the wall plug,
sounds like the cord needs replacement.

There is electricity coming from the tender of the Polar Express O gauge but the engine does not run. Is there somewhere to send it for repair?

Check with the store you purchased it from. If they don't repair trains they should be able to direct to one that does. You're not the first person to need repairs so they will know.

How the power is transfered to the train?

the power from the wall outlet is ( transformed) to 17voilts AC and comes out on posts on the transformer that red and black wires then are connected to the track The rails on the track are entergized and the wheels and the center pickup ride on the track and transfer the power ot the locomotive. the center rail is common and the outside rail is motor power or whisle power.
