My Garmin Etrex wont turn on on batteries but it works fine on external usb power.

My Garmin Etrex was working fine and without any reason it wont turn on on batteries anymore. When I press the power button it shows the garmin message but only for a second and it does not beep, and then it turns off.

But when I connect it to the usb external power it works fine.

I've checked the batteries compartment and it is clean and in good shape and the batteries work fine on other etrex gps.

Is there any way to do a full reset to factory defaults. I don't care about the data on it.

Garmin eTrex will not turn on. I had been using it for a few hours continuously while hiking and then it just went off and won't come back on. When I press the power button it shows the first Garmin image for less than a second and goes back off.

Works fine on it's own battery, but cycles when plugged in

I have the same problem. The unit works until I connect it to whatever computer via USB (Mac or PC). The screen blanks out as soon as I plug in the USB cable. I have to disconnect the device and only then I am able to turn it on again. That started after Firmware update from V 2.90 to 3.00 . I am not sure this is causing problem. What about the firmware versions of your devices ? Are they all on the latest ?
However, does anybody know if there is a way to go back to firmware version 2.9 if it is not possible anymore to connect the device to any computer (evtl. through putting data on the microSD card ?).

Hello :

It seems that the batteries are dead . You need to replace them . When battery is dead it can't be recharged anymore .
If that didn't fix the problem , then I recommend you to clean the batteries base where the batteries set with a q-tip and alcohol containing liquid .

I had the same problem as you with the unit switching off.

I held down the joystick button to perform a "Bootlock"
I don't know if it will work for you.

Garmin Etrex Venture doesn't aquire satellites

I have an eTrex and you can reset the defaults which may help. I don't see any 'reset' operation in the manual other than Restore Defaults.

After switching on and letting the unit go through its initalisation press the button on the front (next to the etrex name) until you get to the main menu. Select Setup and press. Select System and press. Move the button to the left and press. Press the button again to restore defaults.

Wait...Tracking Satellites

Turning off WAAS and then "Super Master Reset" (then reacquiring signal normally) did the trick for me. Note that it will wipe out ALL saved waypoints, so write 'em down before trying. This link describes it:

Wont do anything

The eTrex is on the way back to Garmin! I contacted Garmin ref this problem and the tech suggested that I try to 'reset the master'...Power device off (it won't turn on so this was not a problem), press and hold down for 5 seconds the following button combination: page+enter+power. If this works a prompt will come up asking if you want to clear all user data, to which you have to select 'yes' and this will erase all data saved/stored. Leave the device outside for a minimum of 20 minutes so that it may properly acquire satellites. If the device does not awake using these directions...back to Garmin, which is the action I must now take! lt7578

Will not turn on

I contacted Garmin and they had me remove the microchip inside and see if that would fix the problem. It did not. So they instructed me to send it back in for repair. They gave me a return number and then ended up replacing the unit with a new one. My unit was under a year old so it was no charge.

Garmin etrex legend

I had this problem today, updated the software, now the unit seems to be working perfectly. The unit "crashes" (single line down screen center) as soon as it get enough satelites to work with WAAS.

Go to Garmin site for software updates. Download and install the WebUpdater. Once or unit is hooked up to your computer and you have internet access, the software will download and update your GPS with the latest software fixes. I had software Version 3.7. For the Legend, Version 3.9 fixes the problems with WAAS.
