My door wont open or close but i hear the motor running i read in another post that it could be the gear stripped opened it up and the gear is stripped but when i push the button to open the gear wasn't turning so i wonder if the motor is shot?

Not much info here. Do you hear the motor running? If so, there are some plastic gears that strip out quite often. The door won't close if your photo sensors across the door are messed up. Look at the overhead motor, get the model #, get the manual from the net. I found manuals for many of them. They have trouble guides usually.

If you remove any gear that is coupling it to the motor you should be able to slide it back to where you want. I would put gear back just to hold it in place and keep it from moving. But you do have to replace that gearbox for future operation.
