The update process has corrupted the file system on the memory card inside the unit. To fix it you must format it. Connect it directly to a pc thru the USB cable - it will appear in My Computer as a Removable Media. Right click on them and select Format, then select FAT32 as the format. Wait for the process to end, Safely remove it then shut it down. wait one minute and start it over. It should either start normally or it will display an error message about the firmware - you will have to do the upgrade again.
And from now on ALWAYS wait until the "Now it's safe to disconnect" message appears on the screen and only then remove the cable.
In that case the corruption has affected even the firmware - the player is completely corrupted, it's practically dead. You will have to take it to an Apple shop, they will have to format the memory chip and reload the firmware at a hardware level, with tools that only they have.

the advice that you gave me does not work. i connected it to pc via usb cable and it does not show up in my computer. message is still on ipod - internal, file system fail- format file system.
