You probably have a non-bootable disc in the CD drive - when the computer powers up, your BIOS's first boot device is probably the CD drive and since it has a non-bootable disc in it, it can't boot. Remove the disc and re-boot your computer.

ERROR CODE 2000-0142 and UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Insert your OS disk into your cd/dvd drive

As the machine boots up - it should have an option to hit F2 or F12

Hit the F12 key

This will give you the option of where to boot your machine from.

Select boot from CD/DVD drive

For me windows loaded some files and gave me an option to either install windows or repair.

I selected repair

I was then asked for the admin password -- typed it in.

It brings you to a command prompt :

Type in CHKDSK

or

Type in CHKDSK/R

Hit the ENTER key

Once your machine has finished and repairing the hard drive, type EXIT and press ENTER to restart your laptop.

PRESTO THE DELL LAPTOP IS NOW BOOTING UP AND IS NOW HAVING ALL ITS DATA BACKED UP.

I have also found another command that could be tried if the above fails. Bear in mind, i didnt have to do it, but will post it here anyway.

After the command prompt - type in FIXBOOT

According to the DELL website the error code 2000-0142 is a Drive Self Test failed error code. http://support.dell.com/support/topi...ED2&doclang=en

This has worked out for myself and i do hope it works for you.

guides to make bootable usb:
.you can use hp utility disk to make usb bootable .you can also make it with cmd promt 1. Insert your USB (4GB+ preferable) stick to the system and backup all the data from the USB as we are going to format the USB to make it as bootable. 2. Open elevated Command Prompt. To do this, type in CMD in Start menu search field and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Alternatively, navigate to Start > All programs >Accessories > right click on Command Prompt and select run as administrator. 3. When the Command Prompt opens, enter the following command: DISKPART and hit enter. LIST DISK and hit enter. Once you enter the LIST DISK command, it will show the disk number of your USB drive. In the below image my USB drive disk no is Disk 1. 4. In this step you need to enter all the below commands one by one and hit enter. As these commands are self explanatory, you can easily guess what these commands do. SELECT DISK 1 (Replace DISK 1 with your disk number) CLEAN CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SELECT PARTITION 1 ACTIVE FORMAT FS=NTFS (Format process may take few seconds) ASSIGN EXIT

Unmountable boot volume

If your notebook came with a Windows installation disk, you can fix the issue this way:

1. Insert the installation disk into your CD/DVD drive, and boot up your computer.

2. At the Welcome screen, hit the R key on your keyboard. This will launch Recovery mode.
You should now see a DOS prompt on your screen.

3. Type chkdsk /p and hit Enter. This will launch a utility that scans for hard drive errors.
The process may take some time, so be patient and allow it to do its job.

4. After the chkdsk is done, type fixboot and hit Enter to repair any damaged boot files which may have become corrupted. When prompted to choose "Yes" or "No," type Y for "Yes."

5. Type exit and press the Enter key to reboot your computer.

Assuming chkdsk was successful in fixing the disk errors, you should now be able to boot back into Windows.

If you do not have a Windows installation disk, but have access to another computer with a CD/DVD writer, you can download Hiren's Boot CD to help fix your corrupted boot drive.

1) Download the Hiren's disk image, and follow these instructions for burning the boot CD.

2) To ensure your system boots from the CD you've created, follow these instructions on how to set your BIOS to boot from CDROM.

3) Alternately, you can download a free utility that will create a bootable USB flash drive containing all of Hiren's tools. The above link also provides step by step instruction on creating a Hiren's USB drive, as well as how to set your BIOS to boot from it.

4) Boot the problematic pc from either your Hiren's CD or Hiren's USB drive.

5) Once you've successfully booted your system using Hirens, you will see a menu with a variety
of tools and utilities. Navigate to the hard disk tools menu, and run HDD Regenerator.

You'll need even more patience this time -- as HDD Regenerator is a bit more comprehensive in its error scanning than chkdsk. On the bright side, HDD Regenerator has a reputation for repairing disk errors that chkdsk was unable to.

Good luck, and I hope this helps!

My W3410 eMachine desktop won't Boot at all!!!!!!

Sounds like a harddisk failure unfortunately. You might want to boot your original OS disc and perform a repair (non-destructive), this may either confirm an HD crash or fix the problem.
