SOURCE: dvd npt recording

This usually means that at best the DVD lens needs cleaning, so use a DVD cleaning disc and / or air duster to clean it or that there is a serious error with the DVD recorder itself an it will need replacing. Unfortunately this series of Tosh machines have had many issues with the DVD reliability.

Toshiba RD-88DTKB won't switch on

Check the capacitor in the power supply board, if defective it will show a slight bulge at top, value should be around 1000uf give or take, if handy with soldering iron replace with same value and voltage rating.

I have a Toshiba RD-XS27KE DVD/VR. It does not perform any recording on the HDD - error code E49. I have deleted titles and it still does not record. What can I do ?

I fixed it by 1. delete all on HD drive (a function described at the end of your manual) 2. turn off your recorder 3. turn on your recorder 4. now should E49 not be vivible and recording function again

DVD - Video Finalization rejection

1. The message can appear if the disc has already been finalised.

2. The disc may be faulty.

3. Try copying again from HDD to another disc. Performing a copy and finalise together by using 'DVD Video Creation' from the Edit menu can be more successful than doing each step separately.

4. When you transferred from your video camera, did you use firewire? If so, did you record at the maximum (default) bitrate of 14+ ? If so, you must copy (rate conversion) to the DVD at a maximum bitrate of 9.2, which is the maximum for the DVD playback standard.

HDD Corrupt

I have the XS35 and the HDD drive is curropt. Can I do the following?

1. Download the Toshiba firmware update:
http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/customersupport/model_firmware.asp?model=rd-xs34

2. Burn the ISO to a CD-R disc. ImgBurn is an excellent free burner for this.
http://www.imgburn.com/

3. Insert the CD in your unit. It will auto-install the firmware. Follow onscreen instructions. Takes about 10 minutes total.

After the update, my existing HDD shows are playable again, and I can record and playback from the HDD. I bet it would be a good idea to periodically backup your shows on DVDs, and regularly reformat the HDD.
