Automatic sensing. You still need to have a multi-system TV that plays PAL or it'll still won't work.

DVD will not play in color, what am I doing wrong

Hi, are you using a UK pal tv? Chances are you are watching a US region 1 dvd which is encoded in NTSC. This will play in 525 lines and black and white on a UK PAL tv. Does your DVD player have an NTSC playback to PAL tv swich? It would simply be labeled "PAL" and "NTSC" If not on the back then possibly in the menu. If you have the switch select NTSC and try again.

Hope this helps

Please help

Have you try: NTSC on PAL TV On • NTSC discs will play correctly on PAL-only TVs.
Off Use if your TV is already NTSC-compatible.

Many recent PAL TVs are compatible with NTSC input and so this setting can be switched off. Check the operating
instructions that came with your TV. See also About NTSC on PAL TV on page 124 for related information.

The display screen is rolling and is in black and white.

Hi

You switched to PAL mode from NTSC or vice versa. Most DVDs will only output PAL or NTSC, not both. So even if the disc is region ffree, the fact that it's encoded in PAL (50hz) makes it appear like you describe - no vertical hold / black and white.

Some set top players [Apex, Phillips] will convert PAL to NTSC on the fly or vice versa.

Remember, PAL/NTSC is not the same as Region.

Here's some detailed info:

http://www.sjbproductions.com/web_pages/tip_video/ntsc_pal.htm

You can convert the DVD to NTSC, and strip the region code by following http://www.videohelp.com/guides/how-to-convert-interlaced-pal-dvd-to-ntsc-dvd-id1107#1107

Most players are either NTSC or PAL, however increasingly DVD players from the Far East (Apex, Phillips etc)

How do you change the DVD player mode from PAL to NTSC ?

I just found the way to change the setting from PAL to NTSC.

While the unit is turned off , press the EZ View button on the remote control. Press alternatively the select between the PAL or NTSC setting on the unit display. That's it.

Converting NTSC home Video tapes to Pal DVD or NTSC DVD

You need either an NTSC DVD recorder (keep in mind that the US has 110 voltage, while Australia does not), or a computer card that supports NTSC. Some video capture cards support both NTSC and PAL (often switchable). Choose good quality, and pay attention to video/sound sync - some bad quality cards loose sync. Once the tapes are transferred to DVD - and keep it native NTSC all the way, they can be played on virtually any PAL DVD player/TV combo. With an NTSC source, it's best NOT to convert to PAL, while with a PAL source in the US, you'd need to convert to NTSC or only show the DVD on a computer (where NTSC/PAL doesn't matter).

How to convert my Philips DVP5990 to play PAL?

Press SETUP
Use the arrows to highlight Video Setup Page
Select TV Type - change it to PAL

There isn't a way to view PAL and NTSC at the same time with this player, but you can always go to the video setup page and switch between the two. Restoring the player back to its factory defaults will automatically switch it back to NTSC.

Oritron dvd 3119 player

You have to blindly instruct the NTSC/PAL menu item, which toggles between NTSC and PAL;
This is how it is done:

1) turn your dvd player off.
2) Turn it back on and make sure there is no DVD in the player tray.
This will ensure the menus are active
3) Using the remote, press the dowm menu selector key exactly three times
4) press the center menu select key once.
This will activate the display adjustement menu
5) press the down menu key exactly once.
This will activate the NTSC/PAL menu
6) press the center menu key
DONE.
The player should now have switched back to NTCS if it was in PAL.

IF it was in NTSC it should have switched back to PAL.

Note: If you still have the manual you can follow the menu tree blindly using the instructions in the manual. The above sequence is for activating the NTSC/PAL menu.
This player can also switch to progressive scan, which creates a similar problem. At least the progressive scan menu has enough warnings before it will actvate.
