I HAVE A 170 REDDY HEATER THAT RUNS FOR APP.10 MINUTES AND QUITS BLOWING OUT BLACK SMOKE I HAVE CHANGED FILTERS AND CHECKED PRESSURE WAS AT6. PSI CAN YOU GIVE ME ANY HINTS

sounds like you have dirt in your fuel tank, as the heater runas it picks up the dirt in the filter plugging it up. When the heater shuts off, the dirt falls out of the filter. You start the heater back up and it does it all over again. Empty your tank and change the fuel filter. Should be fine then.

Heater runs a few minutes then blows smoke and cuts off

Are you using the old fuel from last year? If so, drain and clean the tank. Replace with fresh fuel and replace the fuel filter. Check or replace the air filters. Check your ignitor for proper operation. Test again. Good luck.

Starts runs for a minute two the shuts down and blowes smoke

jerome kr406,

This is a classic problem with the reddy heaters. They have a filter which over time plugs up. This causes the air/fuel mixture ratio to change because the pump pressure is determined by the air bleed. As the filter plugs the air pressure drops and the fuel also drops meaning the burner is running lean. This eventually causes the unit to shut down and as you said smoke comes out. It is a fairly easy fix and I have a tip which will walk you through it at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4124129-yearly_maintenance_reddy_heaters . My tip will link you to the place to get the parts you need as well as how to perform the additional maintenance that these heaters require.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the excellent rating. Great ratings help to keep experts helping everyone solve their problems. Thank you.
