Verify that the radio is enabled.
It is possible to disable the transmitter of the wireless card without Device Manager showing any problems.
Note: Follow the instructions provided to enable wireless card.

  • Most wireless cards will put an icon in the system tray (the line of icons in the lower right corner of your screen). Right click this icon and it may have a menu option to enable/turn on the wireless radio.
  • Some systems come with a Wireless Radio switch to disable the wireless radios. The wireless radio switch is usually located on the front side of the machine. If you are having difficulties with wireless connections, make sure the Wireless Radio switch is set in the On position.

How can i turn on wifi?

Step 1:
which operating system ?
For the most part, IBM has switched its focus away from personal computers and more towards large business items such as servers and networks. However, it is still possible to use and purchase an IBM Thinkpad. These are IBM's version of the laptop. A majority of IBM Thinkpads still use Windows XP and offer the function of connecting to WiFi, as long as the connection has been properly configured.

Power on the IBM Thinkpad and wait for it to completely boot up. Right-click the small wireless desktop icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. Select "View Available Wireless Signals" from the pull-up menu. This is going to load a small window that displays all of the available WiFi signals in the area. There are going to be padlock icons next to the signals if a password has been placed on them. Click on one of the WiFi signals to which you want to connect. If a password is required, you are going to be asked here to type it in. Wait a few moments for the IBM Thinkpad to connect to the WiFi signal. The computer is going to display a small message window once the connection has completed. You have now finished the configuration, and you can begin to surf the Internet.

Where is the wireless switch located on the IBM thinkpad T42

Unlike the newer laptops, the T42 doesn't have it's own wireless switch. So in order to get the wireless working, you need to also make sure that the Power Management driver and the Hotkey driver are installed as well.

Load the drivers in this order:

1) Power Management driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4GXPEG
2) Hotkey driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68000
3) Wireless Driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70504
After downloading it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint and run the setup file from there.
4) Access Connections (Optional) - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4ZLNJB

WIRELESS SWITCH

Some IBM's don't have a wireless switch. If it's asking you to check to be sure that the wireless switch is on, or it won't let you enable the radio, try a different driver. Get the make and model of the wireless card and go to driverguide.com.
