There is a common occurrence of total failure in Xbox 360 the 'red ring of death', where three of the red lights on the console flash, and the console locks up. there is a recall and repair for the failure that extends to 3 years from purchase, many xbox 360 have been repaired more than once under this plan, my son's has. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907534?sd=xbox
MS will not repair the xbox if it has been opened they will suggest that the failure is caused by any modification, take photographs of the console before placing it in the shipper MS will send you for the repair, they will damage it, you will need proof
do not attempt repair yourself, http://service.xbox.com/servicehome.aspx

Not all Xbox games are compatible with the new Xbox 360 system. Most of the time if you buy your games from Game Stop or other game stores the bar code sticker will have a (BC) in it which means the game is backwards compatible with the new Xbox 360 console. If the bar code sticker does not have the (BC) it will not play in the 360 console.
This can happen as the sensors on the back of the DVD drive overheat, I mean of course check that the discs are clean but it sounds like you will have to stop the heat build up to get your Xbox 360 working again.
The pro and premium motherboards take the 20 and 60gig HDD they can not handle a 120gig. Have him try to play a game with out any hard drive attached and see if it works. If it works have him put on his original drive with the console on then turn it off. Unplug the power cord and then turn it back on. Good luck,
when the new games came out, the console updates itself when you go to play the game. Look on the back of your console at the numbers. (not serial or part) You should see 2006 or 2007. It is most likely that you have an 2006 which means that your graphics card isnt strong enough to handle the graphics from these games. If you call up microsoft and tell them that the console had the 3 red rings (even though it doesnt) They will take your console, repair it, and update it all for free.
