Dear Expert, When I went to turn on my Roper dryer it made a humming sound for a few seconds then quit, without out the dryer ever starting. I then had my wife depress the start know while I held the dryer door switch in and hand rotated the drum. The dryer hummed again then quit. I appreciate your help on this. Michael

Check and see if there is any thing in the dryer vent if not.open the door hold the door switch in like the door is shut.have your wife push the start switch in and turn the drum counterclock wise if it starts then the motor has gone bad if it hums still its still the motor.if it does start stop the dryer and try restarting several times sometimes they get a dead spot and it may work for years or may die tomorrow but these are a couple of things to try good luck

The dryer ran for two complete cycles. the third cycle the dryer would not start. When the timer was switched it made a humming noise.

Hello,

That sounds pretty typical of a motor that has tight bearing and shutting off due to excessive heat being created at the motor because of the tight bearings on the motor. What will usually happen whena motor is very tight is that it will run a few minutes (or cycles) and get too hot and shutoff until it cools down and will start then shutoff agian once too hot.Along with it not starting because of the friction of the tight bearing the motor will make a humming noise and may or may not start.

My Roper dryer worked fine until my basement flooded about 6 inches of water on floor. Now my dryer just hums when I try to start the dryer. The heat does come on. When I spin the drum and hold in the door...

It sounds like the motor was damaged in the flood. You may be able to salvage it by spraying both ends of the motor shaft with penetrating oil several times moving it in between, but you may not be able to salvage it.

We just purchased a new Samsung Dryer model #DV218AEB/XAA the lights will come on but when you attempt to start the dryer there is a hum, the dryer does not spin, then the hum goes away after a few...

Could be a couple things causing this problem. If you can turn the durm by hand without much resistance then the belt may be too loose. This could be because the spring on the tension pully came off or the belt streached. The humming you hear is the motor spinning. If you cannot turn the drum by hand then something could be stuck between the drum and the frame of the dryer.
I would also check that the dryer is wired correctly, because low voltage could be causing the motor to hum but not turn.
