Without call waiting or a second line, callers will get a busy signal if you're already on a call. This happens at the switchboard; it doesn't matter what type of answering machine you have because the second call doesn't get that far. You can record your own message on the 1739 but, as mentioned above, if you're already on a call then the second call never gets that far.
The unit appears to be stuck in "message retrieval mode) and is asking for your password to give you access when you call in(remote answering). You need to return the unit to it's factory default settings. If you don't still have the instructions you can get them here:http://telephones.att.com/docMgt/public/art/309494/1739_manual.pt2.pdf. Get remote access code from the machine get it by pressing set up button on answering machine. Go to another phone when machine picks up enter access code then enter *7 record new message press 5 when done then to end call enter *9
