lots of laptop fail like this, its only cheap plastic base.
if its forced to hard or lid closed with objects in the way
the cheap plastic mounts snap,
it needs new bottom case.

i have same problem with 1318 and just relized today that there were to small little screws missing on right side hinge. screen was very loose and would easily fall backwards . i managed to find sum in a junk draw and put them in as good as i could and its feels like new again. i plan on getting correct screws online or from hardware store but its good for now

The only people who have the hinge is Dell themselves. I've checked all over. The only parts available are the Center Console Cover & The Back Cover. If the hinge itself is broken, then you will have to send it to DELL. They'll tell you that the whole screen needs to be fixed- just to hike up the price of repair. If you want, you can buy the back cover, which for the most part, will cover the exposed wires on the hinge, but the front of the hinge will still be exposed. What I would love to find is a metal hinge for the DELL Inspiron 1318, like that found in the Dell Studio XPS version. The plastic hinges only guarantee that we will remain loyal customers. Sorry if this didn't help much.
