Unfortunately when a battery burns out whether it be lithium or nickel-cadmium, they no longer can be re-chargable, go online and see if there is a recall on the battery that you have and see if they can help, or you just may be stuck having to purchase another battery or possibly another drill alltogether.

The yellow light in your charger comes on because the charger senses a short inside the battery. Your 19.2 volt NiCD battery is made up of 16 1.2 volt nicad cells. If one or more of these cells develop a short then the charger will not charge the battery. There is a solution for this and it works most of the time. It's called BATTERY RESURRECTION. Using the correct procedure you shock the cells to remove the shorts - then the charger will charge the battery again. Usually, the battery will run close to new, but might need another resurrection in the near future. You can see what people say about it here - dewalt-battery.uniquedynamics.com

18v 12 cordless trimmer/edger. Why won't it start?

the trimmers switch may be faulty.

CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK
Battery packs for this tool are shipped in a low charge condition
to prevent possible problems. Therefore, you should
charge them until the green LED on the front of the charger
comes on.
NOTE: Batteries will not reach full charge the first time they
are charged. Allow several cycles (operation followed by
recharging) for them to become fully charged.
CHARGING A COOL BATTERY PACK
See Figure 3.
If battery pack is within normal temperature range, the red
LED on charger will come on.
NOTE: If the charger does not charge the battery pack
under normal circumstances, return both the battery pack and
charger to your nearest Ryobi Authorized Service Center for
electrical check.
n Charge the battery pack only with the charger provided.
n Make sure the power supply is normal household
voltage, 120 volts, 60 Hz, AC only.
n Connect the charger to the power supply.
n Place the battery pack in the charger aligning raised rib
on the battery pack with the groove in the charger.
n Press down on the battery pack to be sure contacts on
the battery pack engage properly with contacts in the
charger.
n Normally the red LED on charger will come on. This
indicates the charger is in fast charging mode.
n Red LED should remain on for approximately 1 hour
then the green LED will come on. Green LED on
indicates battery pack is fully charged and charger is
in maintenance charge mode.
NOTE: The green LED will remain on until the
battery pack is removed from the charger or charger is
disconnected from the power supply.
n If both yellow and green LEDs come on, this indicates
a deeply discharged or defective battery pack.
Allow the battery pack to remain in the charger for 15
to 30 minutes. When the battery pack reaches normal
voltage range, the red LED should come on. If the
red LED does not come on after 30 minutes, this may
indicate a defective battery pack and should be
replaced.
n After normal usage, a minimum of 1 hour of charging time
is required to fully recharge battery pack.
n The battery pack will become slightly warm to the
touch while charging. This is normal and does not
indicate a problem.
n Do not place the charger and battery pack in an area of
extreme heat or cold. They will work best at normal room
temperature.
NOTE: The charger and battery pack should be placed
in a location where the temperature is more than 50°F
but less than 100°F.
n When batteries become fully charged, unplug the
charger from power supply and remove the battery
pack.

Not working

It sounds as though your battery is dead. If you place it on charge, does it start then? If so, charge overnight and try with the charger unplugged. If it does not start, I think you have a bad battery. The yellow light indicates it is charging, but some notebooks do not start if the battery is bad, even if plugged in. You might try taking the battery out, and see if it works when plugged in. I hope this helps you find your problem.

I bought a Ryobl Power Drill 14.4volt last week at a D.I.Y. store and have found when charging the batteries the light on the charger is Yellow. In the instruction manual they only mention Red when...

yellow usually indicates a HOT battery and is waiting for a cool down before recharging or it can mean a defective battery/charger. If you just bought this unit I would take it back for warranty replacement.

Battery not charging. Orange and Green light on charger. 18V Plus one system

The air holes on the bottom of the batteries are there for the battery to vent. Downside is, these vents can also allow moisture to get in and prevent contacts from letting the battery charge and causing the "defective" display on the charger.

I work on pool and spa equipment and I had dropped my batteries in a small puddle of water where I was working, both went dead immediately and both showed "defective" on the charger even after drying them out for a few days.

Tried using a can of air and gave each of the vent holes several shots... The batteries charged and are now working perfectly.

I'm sure even overnight condensation could be the culprit for a charger to display "Defective"

It sounds like your battery is bad. If yellow and green are on for more than 15 minutes it probably a defective battery pack. See page 8 in the manual.
