The Apple iPod shuffle is a digital music player that contains a single indicator light that relays information about the device's battery condition, computer connection and any errors the device is having. The indicator light is capable of blinking red, green or orange as well as displaying a steady red, green or orange light. The iPod Shuffle includes a Universal Serial Bus interface and buttons on the front of the device for controlling music files.
Blinking Orange A blinking orange light indicates the iPod Shuffle is receiving an update via iTunes to the device's internal components. The update could include a patch to repair an error the player encountered once before, an update to the player's file-saving software, or a combination of security, repair and software updates. Updates are free and automatically sent directly from Apple through iTunes to your iPod shuffle before a sync process starts. Disconnecting iPod Shuffle When the player's light is blinking orange, do not unplug the device from your computer's USB port this will stop the update process and possible corrupt the device's internal hard drive. Let the update process and sync process finish before clicking "Eject" within iTunes and removing the player. Disk Use Enabled If you use your iPod Shuffle as a flash drive and not as a music player, a blinking orange light means that the device is connected to your computer and ready to accept files. The "Disk Use" enabled setting is changeable within iTunes if you decide to use your iPod Shuffle for music storage instead of file storage. When set up as a flash drive, the iPod Shuffle is assigned a drive letter by your computer's operating system and the drive lets you "drag and drop" files to the device. b> Charging If your iPod shuffle's battery is completely depleted or low on charge, connect the player to your computer immediately for charging then leave it connected to receive any updates to the device's software and internal components. Its indicator light may or may not blink orange until after it is fully charged. If the battery is low on charge or completely depleted, you may receive an error stating that the iPod is corrupt or needs restoring, close the error message and let the device fully charge.

For the Sansa Fuze, the selection Shuffle Mode is correct, just like you told:
In Main Menu > Music > Submenu > Music Options > Shuffle Mode:
1. Select Shuffle.
2. Use thumbwheel to choose Shuffle on or Shuffle off.
(to play songs in random order, set Shuffle to ON).
3. Press Select to change the Shuffle mode.
When you start it up it should be at the "Home" menu. If you press the "M" button once it will take you to another menu that gives you a fair amount of options. The first selection should be "Shuffle". Just press the play button and it should turn the "Shuffle" on. Hope this helps :)
If the status light blinks orange when you press a button, the iPod shuffle buttons are
disabled. Press and hold Play/Pause (’) for about three seconds, until the status light
blinks green.

If the front status light on your iPod shuffle blinks orange and green when you press any button, then your iPod shuffle is experiencing some type of error. Try these troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.
To troubleshoot the iPod shuffle error light:
1. Turn off your iPod shuffle
2. Wait a few seconds
3. Turn your iPod shuffle back on again
If this does not resolve the problem:
1. Check to make sure there are songs on your iPod shuffle
2. Use iTunes to add songs to iPod shuffle and try again
If your iPod shuffle continues to display a blinking orange and green light, use iPod Updater 2005-02-11 or later to restore iPod shuffle, and then add songs with iTunes.
If your iPod shuffle still shows a blinking orange and green light after trying all of the above steps, your iPod shuffle may need service.
Best of Luck.
