The hand controller is stuck in DOWNLOAD mode. Usually cycling the power off and then back on fixes this issue. Is the scope new? If it is take it back to the store and get a replacement (at least get a new hand controller).

The batteries are FRESH I would assume?

Here is Celestron's instructions for fixing these type of problems:

New out of the box, our Celestron Nexstar 4se does not ask for our location. Cannot find it anywhere in the controls to input, therefore it will not align.

RESET the hand controller-- then turn it off-- wait 15 seconds and turn it back on. If this does not fix it the firmware will need to be reloaded. You will need a special cable from Celestron to update the firmware.

I would simply return the scope and get another one-- if the scope is new.

I have connected the hand held remote control to me Celestron NexStar 80GTL and nothing happens. The remote will not power up. Don't know if the problem lies with the remote or is a more major...

Are the batteries fresh? You can also try a new hand controller cable maybe the one you have is broken which is a common problem.

Beyond that you can try to borrow another hand controller and try it. If none of these work, then you have a blown circuit inside the telescope. It will need to be returned to Celestron for repairs.

Turn on switch and I get a transmitting data message. It will not slew or leave this mode.

Reset the hand controller and re-enter the firmware. Instructions are on this website:

What does no response 16 mean on a 8se nexstar telescope hand controller

This means that the hand control has lost communication with the electronics board within the base of the telescope. The number following this message will indicate the address of the component that has lost communication. 16 indicates the azimuth or RA motor board, 17 the altitude (declination) motor board. Unfortunately, this number doesn't tell why the error has occurred.

To clear the no response messages, repeatedly press UNDO. This fix may be only temporary and does not address the potential underlying problem.

You may want to send it in/return it for repairs.

Im trying to set up the location zone for Australia and can only get america and cant get any internatial cities. im in Adelaide, South Australia

You can enter the Latitude and Longitude of your SITE rather than the city. Also check on the Celestron.com web site for updated hand controller firmware which you can download and install. You will need a special cable (which you can buy) that connects the computer to the bottom of the hand controller.

I am new to astronomey and I just purchased a used TASCO Starguide 60 telescope at a garage sale. I did not receive an owners/''how to'' manual; but I did get info from this site that directed me to a...

Locate a local astronomy club and attend their star parties. They will help you with the telescope. NO! Nexstar hand controller do not work on TASCO telescopes. You bought a VERY VERY small 60mm telescope. You would have been better off buying 10x50mm binoculars as your first "telescope".

The azimuth adjustment keys don't work

Send it back along with the hand controller describing the problem. Could be several things including a bad hand controller. If there is a local astronomy shop nearby take the scope there and ask to try one of the hand controllers in the shop and test it. If it now works you just need to buy another hand controller.

Otherwise send it in for repair

Hand control comes up with no response 16

bintangchris: error 16 indicates a bad Hand controller, you may need to buy another one, also check all your connections going to the head assembly. Also error 16/17 indicates the HC cant communicate with the the RA/DEC control boards. It may need to go back to Celestron for repair.
