How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Using Hardware
If you cannot boot the ThinkPad, you will have to reset the IBM ThinkPad password via hardware. If only the power-on password is set, do the following to remove the power-on password. If both the power-on password and the supervisor password are set, do the following to remove the passwords:

The power on password can be removed by simply taking out the CMOS (aka, backup or BIOS) battery at the bottom of the main battery compartment for a minute, re-installing it and then powering up the system. However, if there is a supervisor (aka, BIOS) password also enabled, then while the power on password is eliminated, the BIOS password will kick in and the system will refuse to continue booting until the supervisor password is provided. If you don't know what the supervisor password is, then you are looking at a motherboard replacement (what IBM recommends) or figuring out how to read the stored password out of the system.
