Hi there, sorry to hear you are having problems. Please follow this How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Using Hardware

If you cannot boot the ThinkPad, you will have to reset the IBM ThinkPad password via hardware.

If only the power-on password is set, do the following to remove the power-on password.

  1. Power off the computer
  2. Remove the DIMM cover on the bottom side of the computer.
  3. Short-circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit.
  4. Under the short-circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The power-on password is removed.
  5. Reinstall the DIMM cover.

If both the power-on password and the supervisor password are set, do the following to remove the passwords:

  1. Power on the computer by pressing and holding F1.
  2. Enter the supervisor password. The Easy-Setup menu appears.
  3. Click on the Password icon.
  4. Click on the Power on icon.
  5. Enter the supervisor password and press the Space bar.
  6. Press Enter twice.
  7. Click on Exit; then click on Restart.

SOURCE: IBM Thinkpad T23 2647 Power on password

The power on password can be removed by simply taking out the CMOS (aka, backup or BIOS) battery at the bottom of the main battery compartment for a minute, re-installing it and then powering up the system. However, if there is a supervisor (aka, BIOS) password also enabled, then while the power on password is eliminated, the BIOS password will kick in and the system will refuse to continue booting until the supervisor password is provided. If you don't know what the supervisor password is, then you are looking at a motherboard replacement (what IBM recommends) or figuring out how to read the stored password out of the system.

Hello how to reset bios password of ibm thinkpad t23 2647

Hi,

To unlock the bios password on your laptop, you will need to remove the cmos battery on your laptop for some minutes and insert back, the cmos battery is located on the motherboard of your laptop, once the cmos battery is removed from the motherboard for some minutes, the bios password will be reset, and that fix the problem.

Take care.

Forgot my password to power on my ibm t23 what can i do ?

If a BIOS or HD lock password you are out of luck.

BIOS password means replacement of the system board. HD password requires replacement of the HD and reinstallation of all software on new drive.

This is a security feature so no one can steal laptops and try to use or sell it.

NEED PASSWORDS TO ACCESS HARD DRIVE

Sharon, you have a extremly difficult problem.
Why is the laptop in for repair, is the laptop faulty, how do you know the hard drive is faulty when you cannot start up the laptop?

It appears that you have or someone has set up a power on password and possibly a password protection on the hard drive.
If you hard drive is faulty it is highly unlikely that you cannot retrieve any data off your hard drive with or without the passwords.
IBM ThinkPads laptops store the Power On password on an EEPROM chip and removing the BIOS battery cannot clear this password. there are no backdoor passwords that you can use. The passwords are used to prevent unauthorized access to the laptop and its data.

If there isn't a password on the hard disk, and the hard disk is not faulty, you can remove the hard drive and connect it to a working computer to read and copy off your data. I suggest you connect your hard drive using a USB hard drive adapter and connecting it to a working computer's USB port.

IBM states that if you don't know the Power On password, therefore you cannot get into the BIOS to remove the password, and you need to replace the motherboard (this is not cheap).
There is a way to hack into the laptop, it required some electronic experience to build a reader device, dismantle the laptop, solder it to the EEPROM chip, connect the output to a working computer, run a reader program, locate the password from this data, unsolder the wires, put the laptop back together and boot up and enter the password.
For detailed information go to www.allservice.ro/forum
I have successfully removed these passwords, it is a lot of work, and needs to be tackled by an experienced person.

Best of luck.

T23 SVP gone

Ah! Passwords.... Do you see anything about WINDOWS before it ask? Then its a windows password and you can go hunt all over filesharing land for a PE disk, preferably a Winternals PE disk.. or be nice and buy one.. On a borrowed computer of course..

Nothing about windows before it asks for a P/W? Oh goody bios password... Much more trouble.. On IBM machine really nasty... Your HD is probably locked too.. You can spend hours on google after this, but you may have a brick.. or be looking at building a custom board with instructions from this guy in Australia, hooking teeny tiny wires to a chip on your laptop baord, running a program and sending the result and $25 to him..
IBM laptops=great bloody bios password security.. Oh.. Co. up in Canada does it for $400, after proof you own the thing..

Good hunting..

Power-on password problem!

The power on password is stored on an EEPROM chip and removing the BIOS/CMOS battery won't help.
You need to read the EEPROM chip to get the password.

for solution to your problem (you need to construct an interface hardware and install two programs on a working computer)
