I've had my oil filled space heater for over a year and it's been working great. I turned it on this morning and I get an oil smell coming out of it now. HELP!! It's never done this before and the smell was quite overwhelming. I had to turn it off after 5 minutes.

It works both ways if you are home it will give a constant heat , but is it safe in your place to leave it on while you are out . Once they are hot they should cut out on the thermostat thus costing less to run .
I am having the same problem. I am not sure the cause but I was reading that some manufacturers will put automatic shut off switches in the electronics. I read that it was mainly printers and faxes but I wonder if that could hold true here as well?
This same thing happened to me, and yesterday as well no less. I've had mine for a 3-4 years. I think It had run out of oil, which is weird because I've had a Holmes heater for nearly 10 years and it still has plenty of oil left. If you shake it, can you hear the oil? I went and got another from Target last night (it was the coldest night of the year) and can hear the oil swishing around in it as I set it up. Hope it last longer than another 3-4 years or my next one will be a Holmes.
These heaters last about three years, and are throw aways, unless you have some in the ole shed like I do.Checking the switches is the first thing to do,remove them to see if they are burned up on the other side where the connection is.If they are, that could be the smell,or the thermostat is melted down, and smelling, again, throw away,,or save it,and buy a new one,and you will have parts for when it goes out,if the switches are melted down,a compatible switch,if found, can be replaced in the heater, but something made the switches melt down, most likely a heating element in the tanks, non replacable.
