Product Details for 5100 400Gb Desktop SATA Hard Drive
This SATA Hard Drive is used and has been tested for proper functionality. Dell Dimension 5100 400Gb Desktop SATA Hard Drive.
Try getting into the bios(maybe f1 or delete key while rebooting depends on manufacturer) make sure the hard drive is showing in the bios and if it is then try reinstalling your operating system(windows)
As long as you have Windows XP with service pack 3 or a newer version of windows installed.....there is no limit on capacity. Go with the biggest and baddest there is.....
First, I would remove the 120 from the system during installation. If possible, use a Windows XP disc w/ SP2 to speed up installation of the OS. Plus SP2 handles a maximum disk size error which limits you maximum partition size. (Under SP1 I think the largest partition can be 137 MB) I would recommend using NTFS format for the hard drive. Once it is installed, you can always re-connect it to simplify the installation. If it's still freezing, check the disc for damage or defects.
You can change the hard drive, but it will create major driver issues. You will have to let the computer tell you which drivers are missing and go back and download them from the manufacturers website or use the software that you have. You cannot damage the hdd doing this.
The easy way to do this would be to install this as a secondary hdd, this would allow for more storage and less problems.
You have to go online and search then download the drivers for preparing SATA laptop harddrives for installation of Windows XP otherwise during installation it will tell you there is no hard drive found.
XP SP 2 supposedly has no limitations on hard drive size so if you selected it to use the maximum available space during setup it "should" have picked up the entire drive. The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you are running the latest BIOS on your system, so you may want to check into that if you haven't already. I hate to say this but you may have to rerun the XP setup from your CD and make absolutely sure that the maximum partition size is selected and that it matches the size you expect it should.
Good luck and let me know how it goes. I'll continue to research and will let you know if I find anything of any help.
Hollyecho, many thanks for your response.
