Power shuts off on my dyson dc17 animal

The power on my dyson dc17 animal shuts off when I try to use the hose. It powers back on when I release the handle back for normal vacuum use.

My Dyson Animal 15 shuts off also when I try to use handle. It will only turn on when the handle is laid way back. It is not picking stuff up as well.

    have the same problem!!

  • fausett5541 Sep 22, 2008

Vacuum only runs if brush-bar is on and handle is leaning back. Everything shuts off when vacuum is in upright position, or when hose attatchment is removed. I think this is a switch problem.

  • gacop45 Sep 26, 2008

Same problem along with the suction not working. Both Problems began at the same moment.

  • Anonymous Jan 21, 2009

it will be running then it will quit then about 15 mins later it will start back up.

  • Anonymous Feb 04, 2009

Does anyone know where this filter is mentioned by lamkit3 in article above???

  • surflar Feb 10, 2009

  • aispurom Apr 02, 2009

Our Dyson turbine head keeps shutting off while in use. Sometimes after only a few seconds, and sometimes after a few minutes. If we push button to turn back on..it always does have power, but as mentioned it doesn't seem to last. Could there be a problem inside the hose with a wire?

I had the same issue. Got on the phone with Dyson. THe vacuum has a safety feature where if the motor gets too hot it cuts off. You have to leave it for 45 minutes or so and then it will work again. There is an underlying issue though. My problem was the black gasket thats in the debris bin shifted, probably from when emptying i pushed it on something. The black gasket should actually hang off the bottom like a skirt and the 2 groves should fit in on the groves of the gray mechanism. This seal is what provides 100% suction. Because of this..my vaccumm has been accumulating pet hair by the belt which i hear alot of people talking about and especially in the filter area. This is because I broke the seal by not having the gasket in place properly and it wasnt sucking 100%. They are sending me a complete new cyclone unit which has the debris catcher as well as she said its probably so caked up with debris it will never work again 100%. no questions asked they are sending it to me free of charge.

So if you remove the clear cyclinder debris catch thing all you will have is the purple cyclone on top and on the bottom is the black rubber gasket....

I had this same problem, I fixed the: ''The black gasket should actually hang off the bottom like a skirt and the 2 groves should fit in on the groves of the gray mechanism.'' and it works great now. My black gasket was shoved up due to shoving the dirt and hair down with the debris bin while emptying in the trash can. I also had to clean filters and hair from the belt... but I did that first.... so the actual solution for me was the black gasket.

I had the same issue. Check near the beater bar (unscrew the big plastic screws on the bottom) and look at the belt. There is a small area that collected TONS of pet hair to the point the belt wouldn't move. You may have to get a screwdriver in there to pull the hair trapped under the belt and in and around that area.

It's happened a couple of times and this has fixed it so far.

Somewhat of a design flaw if you ask me.

HEPA filter is under cap above right wheel as you are looking at the machine. Screw is on bottom side of vacuum (probably Torx 15). Just took my Dyson in for service and they replaced a FILTHY HEPA filter.

was shutting off, found the second filter on left side of machine on bottom.. you will need torque screwdriver for one of the screws and regular philips for the other.. top part pops right off, filter clearly all clogged.. cleaned and machine runs great.... took me two minutes to fix...

My DC 17 Animal would only work when the brush was in the down position & the hose attachment wouldn't work at all. There was no suction. We had to take it in to be serviced & discovered that there is another filter in the system that Dyson doesn't tell you about. The person at the service center said he sees this problem a lot with this model because there is nothing about it in Dyson's consumer documentation.

Dyson DC17 POST Hepa Filter. Look for the motor exhaust on the right side as you face the front of the vacuum. The housing cover is on top. You need to remove One screw from the bottom to open the housing. Mine required a small Phillips screwdriver (not a torx). Remove the housing, note the direction of the filter and how it fits into place, remove the filter. Test the vacuum without the filter in place to verify that was your problem (it will be). Replace with a new filter. This is not noted to be a washable filter, but I did wash it, dried it, and used it until my new filter arrived.

I called Dyson and they walked me thru the process of making sure nothing was blocking the airflow and suction. Everything seemed fine (not blocked). We couldn't figure out anything on the phone and I was still having the same problem.

Trying to figure out the solution, I removed (entirely) the filter that you're supposed to clean every 6 months and ran the vacuum (I cleaned this filter 2 months ago). It worked! I cleaned the filter (again!) and let the vacuum run and it seemed fine.

I can understand why they won't instruct you to completely remove the filter but it would save a lot of time if they just had you check ALL the options.

I hope this helps!

I had the same problem. No suction, brush wouldn't turn. I had a blockage in the small hose leading from the brush into the machine. Another place to look is make sure the cap is over the wand, if it's up, the brush won't turn.

We turned ours on and it went off immediately. We cleaned the filter (which needs to air dry for 24 hours). Then we checked the hoses and the little u-bend (1 screw turn to unlock/relock) and emptied it. There is another bend (tuba shaped) up from this so while the u-bend is unlocked, feel for dirt. Then lock. There is a 3 screw plate on the bottom next to the rollers. Unscrew these 3 (unlock/relock) and clean that part and the little clear hose. We checked the regular long hose and after all this, the power came back. Unfortunately, we do not have an extra filter so we borrowed a vacuum. But, now we hope to have this one longer. It is in its 6th year. Thank you to Dyson for walking us through every step even after the warranty was over!!!!!

I had the4 same problem, and it was, indeed, the other filter. Thanks for saving me a trip to the vaccuum store and another week of using my crappy backup vaccuum! Such an easy fix, not sure why inthe world they do not tell you about that other filter!

When I tilt my Dyson DC 17 Animal upright so that I can use the hose, the vacuum powers off. As soon as I tilt it back down, it turns back on.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. When you stand the cleaner upright, the brushbar motor is designed to shut off automatically. However, the suction motor should continue to run unless you turn it off manually with the on/off switch. If both motors seem to be shutting off when you stand the cleaner upright, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly so we can resolve this issue for you as quickly as possible.

You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to [email protected], someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

I opened my dc17 dyson to clean teh motor. trying

I'm not sure about all the switches used in the vacuum, but I recently took some pictures of the power button assembly. The buttons in the picture below are (from left-to-right): Circuit Breaker, Brush Switch, Power Switch

The next picture shows how the plastic buttons that operate the brush and power switches should go together:

And finally, this is how the power button assembly reattaches:

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

It sounds as though your wand/hose assembly is blocked. Try following the blockage procedure in your user guide or visit our website's support section where you can use our self help guide to diagnose problems.

Dyson dc17 power on/off button will not engage when pressed

The on/off switcdh underneath the button sounds like it's faulty and will need replacing. I would suggest caling Dyson in your country with the Serial No of the unit for guidance.
