I have an older 50,000 BTU heater. It fires up right away , but after 15 - 20 seconds the reset kicks out and shuts down the unit. I can keep resetting the override switch, it re-fires, then the reset kicks out again. I have new fuel, the spark plug works well, good flame, just won't stay running. any suggestions? fRED

check and see if the heater has a high temperature limit switch. if it does it will shut the machine off until it cools down.. just replace it with a new one.

Look for signs of a cracked heat exchanger. Flame will turn real orange or yellow when the fan turns on.

if it kicks out right away then it sounds like your fan motor is defective or possibly if the motor has a capacitor it could be defective,also does your receptacle have the ampacity to handle the unit?

either the high heat limit control or the flame sensor, I would guess the flame sensor

You did not state the model numbers of the heaters, so a good guess is all that I can do. Manuals might be available, but models are a must.

By your description the heaters are Hot Surface Ignitor types, opposed to the older technology spark plug heater. Right or wrong? Technology is different & troubleshooting is different.

The heaters are shutting down because the photocell is not seeing the flame, or the flame color is not absolutely correct. The photocell tells the computer to shut the heater down for safety reasons. It's going to be your job to troubleshoot and find out what's wrong.

READ these tips

Either:

1. the reset (safety control) is bad
2. the photocell is defective
3. both of the above

I had the same problem with my heater. It was a cracked fuel line. I replaced the rubber hoses. On mine there was a pick up hose and a feed hose. They were dry cracked. Works great now. Hope that helps you out.
