Computer will not start. I have tried a hard reset and cheked the ac adapter, which seems to be ok. I am being told it may be the motherboard. Since it was working fine one day, and then stopped working the next, is that my only answer?
Re: Computer will not start. I have tried a hard reset...
You do not know for sure if it's the motherboard. Reseat the RAMs, disconnect the hard drive, and see if the POST launches. If it does, access the BIOS. If the BIOS can be accessed, it's not the motherboard - it might be the hard drive.
Re: Computer will not start. I have tried a hard reset...
Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty
One bad lead can cause a computer to fail to detect a hard drive continue on a cycle or to shutdown
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA and
the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
problems
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
hope this helps
Re: Computer will not start. I have tried a hard reset...
This can be due to many reasons namely
Power unit (PSU) failure, broken power switch and short circuits.
see if your motherboard LED indicator light is glowing when you turn on power

for me solved its self after trying everything (take out all parts, reset cmos, 2minutes power button..)
solution - be patient:
power on - wait till cpu gets hot and fan starts (fan okay) > wait till post bios screen (can take some time here 2-3min) > afterwards its booting up as fast as aspected - seems like post hangs for some time after some failure (?battery power drain?)

Only work inside the computer case when the power has been
switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source.
Some of the below steps
recommend removing physical parts within the computer.
While in the computer it is
highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards.
Remove the memory modules from their slots. Take the opportunity to clean the
slots on the motherboards and the memory module connectors.
Use compressed air to blow dust away and clean contacts with
a soft cloth.
Do not use a metallic vacuum cleaner if it touches any
component it may create a short and cause damage to the motherboard or other
components.
Do not use solvent that may attract
dust and never poke things like cotton buds in to slots. lightly
rub an alcohol (Methylated Spirits) on a cloth not to hard let the alcohol do
the work on the copper gold or silver tabs and r
Allow the pins to dry.
They will air dry in a matter of minutes
If reseating the memory did not
resolve the issue try swapping the location of the memory.
If you have only one stick of
memory in the computer try moving it to another slot and then boot the
computer.
Check the memory module and memory slot contacts.
They are either copper tin or gold.
The colour will tell you which they are.
Mixing tin and gold can result in corrosion that prevents
proper contact.
Look for any sign of physical damage to the memory module,
memory slots or the motherboard.
Reseat the memory modules.
You should hear an audible click when they are in place.
Do not use too much force to reseat the memory module in to
the slot this can cause damage to the module, slot or motherboard.
The hardware that you are trying to access is damaged or
failing. Could be a problem with the Hard Drive or the Hard drives

There is a connection problem such as a bad cable
Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive SATA
the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE
HARD DRIVE make sure they have a
secure dust free connections and are not faulty.
Although it would be very rare for the sata lead to be
faulty.
Make sure all leads that are attached to your drives
dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty
Computers need power and data to travel through
every working device and continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads
will end up with a computer error also There are several possible reasons the computer may not be
powering on.
The connections may be loose or damaged.
The AC adapter or power cord may no longer be functioning.
The battery may be defective or no longer working; or the
battery may need to be reset or recalibrated.
If these methods do not solve the issue with your Acer
Aspire, contact Acer support for further troubleshooting options.
Inspect the AC adapter to be certain it is fully connected to the computer.
If the connection is loose, contact Acer for repair service
(see Below).
Online Product Supporthttp://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4/kw/battery
Check the AC adapter connection to the power cord. If the
cord will not stay connected , there may be a defect in the power cord.
Contact Acer for service options or replacement parts.
If the adapter is connected to a power strip, make sure the
strip is powered on and is fully connected to the wall socket.
Connect the adapter to a different electrical outlet if
necessary.
After verifying all connections, attempt to power the
computer on.
If the computer does not turn on, try power reset.
Reset
Disconnect the battery, and detach the AC adapter from the
notebook.
Push the power button, and hold it for 30 seconds.
Reattach the battery.
Reconnect the AC adapter to the computer and a functioning
electrical outlet.
Press the power button. If the computer does not power on,
attempt to power on without the battery.
Power
on Without the Battery
Shut down the computer.
Remove the battery from its compartment.
Connect the AC adapter and power cord.
Verify that the power cord is connected to a functioning
socket.
Press the power button. If this method is successful, the
battery may need replacing.
Recalibrating
the Battery
Attach the notebook to the AC adapter, and allow the battery
to fully charge.
Make sure that there is a green light on the ac adapter. Try checking the end of the cable of the ac adapter and see if it is damaged ( the metal piece that connects into the laptop ). Also check the port on the laptop where you connect the cable of the ac adapter. If that is damaged then you have to request replacment of the motherboard if your laptop is still in warranty.
If a PC suddenly fails to boot properly, you should perform a hard reset
as the first action. Performing the hard reset will correct many
problems. If the computer still does not start properly, select your
symptom from the list below to guide you to the recommended corrective
actions.
Disconnect
all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and SD media cards. You want to test the computer not the accessories!
Disconnect
the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds
to drain all residual power and restore default startup settings.
Reconnect
the AC power adapter (but do not insert the battery), Press
the Power button, Look for
glowing LEDs near caps lock
and num lock
keys, and Listen for
sounds of a fan or other moving parts turning.
If the computer does not start, the LED
lights do not glow, and the display is black, you can perform one or
more of the following actions to resolve the no power issue.
Verify the computer is receiving power from the AC adapter
.
Verify that the AC adapter is not damaged
and is connected correctly to a working wall outlet plug. Verify AC
power is connected to the system board by examining the AC adapter,
wiring, and pin connection for damage. The keyboard LEDs will glow when
AC power is connected to the system board.
Damaged components, like the AC adapter or the pin in the power connector, may require an HP-certified repair.
Use a different AC power adapter
.
If you have access to a different AC
adapter or power pack that is designed for the computer, connect it to
the notebook and try to start the computer. If you own or have access to
more than one notebook, verify that you are using the adapter which
belongs to the notebook.
CAUTION:
Using a power adapter that does not meet the power
requirements or has the wrong type of connector may damage the computer.
On newer notebook models, connecting the wrong adapter to the notebook
may cause the power LED lights to blink but not power the computer.
Remove the battery and boot on AC power only
.
A discharged or defective battery may
prevent the AC adapter from supplying enough power to start the
computer. To verify that power from the AC adapter is available for PC;
remove the battery, connect AC power adapter, and press power button. If
available, try using a different AC adapter, that is rated for the PC,
and repeat this test.
If LEDS do not glow and the fan or hard drive do not spin, AC adapter may need to be replaced.
If LEDs glow and PC boots, the battery may need to be replaced.
Remove the AC adapter and boot on battery power only
.
A defective AC adapter may not charge the
battery and prevent the computer from booting on battery power only. To
verify battery power available for the PC; connect AC power adapter,
allow battery to charge for 30 minutes or more, disconnect the power
adapter and press power button. If available, try using a fully charged
battery, of the same type, from another computer and repeat this test.
If LEDS do not glow and the fan or hard drive do not spin, battery may need to be replaced.
If tests of both the battery and the AC adapter fail, there may be a problem with system board requiring service by HP.
If LEDs glow and PC boots, the AC adapter may need to be replaced.
Not it is either the power adaptor or the mother board please remove the battery then wait for 60 secs. and try to turn it on with the power adapter only.
Hi
Since your computer is not starting up at all its probably not a problem in the hard drive (where the files are stored) It is most likely a problem in the motherboard. Try removing the battery and ac then plug in the ac and try starting up, is the ac working? do you have a power light on the laptop that turns on when you plug in the ac adapter?\
If you don\t have a power light you need to get the ac adapter tested if the adapter is fine then most likely the issue is in the motherboard.
This seems to be a old problem and if you don\t need assistance in solving it. It would be great if you would share to the world how you fixed your problem so other users can benefit from your experience.
try taking out tthe battery and then try powering the system only on ac adapter connected
if it doesn't power on only on the ac adapter make sure that the port on the system where you plug in the ac adapter for any kind of bent or broken pins
if the port is ok then get your ac adapter replaced.
The problem could be your bezel. Remove the 3 screws from the hinges from the rear and you will be able to remove the black strip above the keyboard (after removing the screws, make sure laptop is layed wide open) once removed, press the button on the motherboard under where the power button is. If the unit still does not power up, then your motherboard is bad and needs to be replaced. If it does power up, you need to replace the bezel.
do any lights come on on the machine?
