I Have a SONY Handy cam model CCD TRV 408 E. The problem I am facing is that I cannot see any thing from the view finder when in the camera mode. However when the LCD screen is opened I can see normally thru it. All other functions like ZOOM, record etc. are functioning normally. Is there some problem with the view finder. Kindly let me know the reasons as well as approximate cost for repairs.

The first thing you should try is removing the batteries for 20 to 30 minutes to reset the unit. If this does not work push in on the cassette mechanism at the top while trying to eject. Also check the tape compartment cover screws to make sure they are tight. Any misalignment in the cover mechanism will cause binding which will create the problem you describe. Finally, and I know this will sound unusual, slap the unit on the cassette side. Forcefully but not enough to break anything. This procedure has been helpful many times with similar problems. I know it is not sientific but hey if it works. If none of the procedures solves your problems you may need professional help. The camcorder most likely is not detecting the tape, you have a bad sensor and these sensors all come on a flex type board and the flex board is mounted on the chassis surface. This will mean that the entire mechanism will meed to be diassembled, and is a very big and costly job. My opinion is that this repair will run you abut 250 to 300 bucks and this camcorder is not worth this as new camcorders are under 200 bucks. Good Luck
