I am unable to connect a cd rom from an old pc to my new emachines because there is no "ribbon" to connect the cd to? How else can I connect it to the motherboard? The CD doesn't have a SATA connection.

Look on the mother board for a ribbon connector.. double row of pins.. Some boards will have a legacy connector. If not.. you can buy an adaptor to connect IDE CD to board,

BUT.. for about the same cost, you can buy a cheap new CD-DVD RW - burner.. probably with far better peformance than an old one. About $25 should do it.

I have a CD "tray" in a audio CD player that is

Have you have tried shutting down the pc, and then turning it back on? if that has forced it to close the drive, it's likely dead.
there is a chance the power cable fell off the back, but it's unlikely.

If it's dead then you'll probably need to swap it for a new one. Best to take the old one out and down your local computer shop, pc world, dixons, or something.

I reckon it's an EIDE drive cos of the 52x CD-ROM indicating it's age, so it'll have two connectors, a flat ribbon and a white power connector. Just make sure you get a replacement with the same connections.
Most new drives will be SATA and incompatible.

Bios does not detect cd rom drives, the cd rom drives has power but it does not work cause bios its not detecting it and it a new drive, my toshiba satellite is a85-s107 let me know if u can fix it.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L355D that would not detect the CD Rom in the BIOS although the Rom appeared to powered up and running. I traced the problem to a ribbon cable connector that was between the jack the CD Rom plugged into and the jack on the mother board. The ribbon cable plug at the MB had backed out and was only making the power connections to the Rom making the Rom appear to be operating.

I have lost all icons on desktop, cd rom not

Sounds like your hard drive failed. Memory is cheap, so it's not an expensive fix and easy to do yourself with minimal skills. Once you open the case, there should be 4 screws holding the HDD in place, one fat ribbon type cable and one connector with 3 or 4 wires (power). You can just pop a new HDD in and reconnect and use your software disks to reload the operating system. Most computer repair shops can get the data off of your old drive and load it onto your new one.
By the way, you wouldn't happen to be a Limewire user would you? There seems to be a new trend connecting HDD failure and Limewire use. This is not yet proven but being investigated. It is likely not Limewire, but malware attached to downloaded media.

My pc was doing this but now it's doing something different but simular

Try telling it to boot the CD instead of the disk for now, since you need to install from that...or perhaps a newer OS.

Ribbon hook-up

You should be using two, two connector IDE ribbon cables if I understand your questions correctly.

On IDE 0 you connect the hard drive and one cd drive.
On IDE 1 you connect the second cd drive.

You will need to make sure the jumper settings on the drives are correctly set.
