Press the play/stop button(to the right of on/off button) on the base unit. The unit will announce the number of new and old messages. The unit will give the message number, play the message, then give the time and date the message was recorded.

Press the select key(right button below the screen) on the handset. Press the 2 key on the dialpad to play messages. After playing message date and time is announced.

The above link is the manual. I was looking at pgs 15, 16, and 18. On pg 18 it says there is a default code that will retrieve messages you enter from phone, that's probably it I think. Download is 12.8mb.
