I would suspect a bad switch or a bad motor.
These parts are not available anywhere that I have ever heard of.. You might go to the store you purchased it from and ask them.

Dec 7, 2011 - Polar Express only runs in reverse ... At this time of the year all Polar Express trains are programmed to run North only. ... This would not be so bad on the Strasburg set because half the time, the prototype runs in reverse.

... trains that i set up around Christmas. The first train, according to the box, is a k-line 0/027 gauge dual motor mp-15. For a long time it has only run backwards.
Look for a small opening with little white tabs that can be moved up and down, on both the train and the remote. All the tabs must be in the same position. ( Same thing on a garage door opener.)
If that's not it, make sure the batteries are in correctly in both items, reversed batteries will run lites and such, but not remote controls.
