Brother 4100e Fax Problem - Caller ID won't work with Fax Machine

I set up the fax exactly as the Brother printed manual suggested (TAD/Fax) and still have the problem of Caller ID not working with the fax machine. The 4 choices for setup are: Fax - for dedicated fax lines, answers every call as a fax; TAD - if you have an answering machine, which I do, the external TAD automatically answers every call. Voice messages are stored on the answering machine and your fax is printed; FAX/TEL - you cannot have an answering machine with this setting; and MANUAL - use if you get very few faxes (which is my situation) - you control the phone line and must answer every call yourself.
I thought going to MANUAL setting (I decide when to turn it on for faxing) would surely correct the Caller ID problem, but nope. Still have the same issue - no caller ID. I'm stumped now and have disconnected the FAX machine - the only thing I could do to get back Caller ID. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Called Brother and they said nothing could fix my problem short of getting 2 phone lines. Since I use it so infrequently and my company bought it for me, I just leave it not plugged into the phone line unless I want to send or receive a fax. Thanks.

Usually, fax machines don't have caller ID capability.. If the sender's fax number appears on the faxes you receive, it's just that they have programmed it into their fax machine as a header.

If you can find the MANUAL Receive setting, it will only receive a fax if you push start while it's ringing.

I have a Brother Fax 2820 at home. It is connected to a TAD. I want an external fax machine to send and bypass the voicemail greeting and print the fax. I thought I set the machine to TAD. Any other...

try this paul. hook your phone line from your wall jack to your "line" jack on your fax. then run another phone line from your "external" jack on your fax to your "line" jack on your TAD. now, make sure your fax machine is still set to TAD. here is whats important...set your TAD to 4 rings or less. 2 is the recommened setting. also very important...when you record your outgoing message on your TAD, make sure you leave about 5 seconds of silence before you start recording your message. the reason for this is the fax machine needs to "hear" the CNG tones that originate from the sending fax so that it knows its a fax and then can take over the call. if it doesn't hear those tones because of noise (voices, etc), it will let call go to TAD. you can try to set your TAD to 4 rings, but that doesn't leave much time for fax to "hear" these tones. if you set to 4 and don't get all your faxes, try lowering the setting to 2 or 3 rings.

I have a brother 4100e and it will not receive faxes. When you call our fax line it rings as a normal telephone would. Is the fax machine or something else?? if it is the fax machine how can i fix it

While it is ringing, press the start key to receive a fax.

You are set to MANUAL RECEIVE, check your set-up menus.

I want to send a fax message using Brother 2820 fax machine, but I don't want the receiver to see my phone number when he receives the fax message print out. Is there any way I can do this?

The FAX machine will print the Tel number that has been programmed in your machine. It does not print on the basis of the caller ID received. So i think if you remove the number programmed in your fax machine

Manual Doesn't Work Either!

Fax machines usually don't have Caller ID. If you see the phone number on received faxes its because the sender has programmed it into their fax machine.

Phone line goes to fax, then ans mach...now caller ID won't work.

Set the reception mode to Fax with answer machine TAD. Make sure its set for fax with answer machine.

To recieve fax on brother

Press the 'RECEIVE MODE' button on the right side of the control panel, its next to the large 'FAX START' button. Here are your options :

Select Receive Mode
MANUAL
—You must answer all calls yourself. If you hear fax tones, press
Fax Start
to begin receiving the fax, then hang up. You can use this mode with
Distinctive Ringing. (See
Distinctive Ring
, page 8-1.)
FAX ONLY
—The fax machine automatically answers every call as a fax call. You
cannot receive a voice call, but you can dial out and make a voice call.
FAX/TEL
—The fax machine automatically answers every call. If the call is a fax, it
prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with a double-ring (ring-ring),
different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select
this setting, you’ll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the
following pages). If you have extension phones on the same line as the fax machine,
set Ring Delay to 4. (See
For FAX/TEL Mode Only
, page 5-5.)
TAD:ANSWER MACH.
—This is the only setting in which you can use an external
answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to your fax
machine, and answers every call. Once the TAD answers, the fax machine listens for

The TAD setting works

with an external telephone answering device (TAD); it
does not work with telephone company Voice Mail. Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time

What does "TAD" mean when it appears on the screen?

TAD is Telephone Answering Device. TAD mode is the only mode that can be used with an external telephone answering device (unless you are using a distinctive ring number for receiving faxes). Your telephone answering device must be connected to the jack on the fax machine (labeled "EXT" for USA). When someone dials your telephone/fax number (to send a fax or to speak to you), all the telephones (including the FAX) will ring according to the number of rings you set on the TAD. The Ring Delay setting is not recognized in the TAD mode. If you do not answer the call, the TAD will answer. As your outgoing message is playing, the Fax is in the background, silently listening for fax tones. If the FAX hears fax tones, it will automatically go into the receive mode. If the FAX does not hear fax tones, it remains silent, allowing the caller to leave a message. The above information is correct for a Brother fax machine. Is your fax automatically picking up the call or do you have to push a panel button to start the receive fax process? Perhaps the fax is already "in" your fax machine's memory and only needs a manual printout. Check the fax call log.
