Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Hey!
The easiest way to bypass this problem and download your pictures is using a SD card reader (built-in like in most of the laptops/notebooks - or a SD to USB adapter)...
This way, when connecting the card to the computer, a new drive icon will appear in "My Computer" (or "Computer" in Windows 7/Vista). Double click it, go to the folder CANONxxx (xxx represents a number) and copy/paste the photos to wherever you want on your computer!

I have Mac OS X Snow Leopard system. I've had this camera for a year and have been downloading from this laptop fine since this problem today. This is the first time I've downloaded pictures since I upgraded to Snow Leopard but that shouldn't matter and as I said I've reinstalled the software as well.
