The Dell website says your model comes with 2 usb ports in from and 5 in the rear, all of which are usb 2.0. If this is happening with just this one device then there might be a problem with the device not your PC. Try plugging it into one of the other ports and try a different device. If you get the message on all of the ports and with all divices then the USB driver may have been corrupted go to the Dell website and look for updated/new drivers, there is probably a direct link to dell on the start menu. If you have the resource disks for the computer one of them is probably labled as having the device drivers on them. Put that disk into your drive then from the start menu open control panel, double click on system and go to the hardware tab. Open the Divice Manager. At the bottom of the list expand the Universal Serial Bus Controlers. Right click any of the USB Root Hub entries and select update driver, follow the instructions on the wizard that opens. Good Luck

PCIROOT(0)#PCI(1D01)#USBROOT(0)#USB(2)

Try installing the chipset drivers for your Dell from their website, linked below. Pay attention to which drivers your looking at, depending on your operating system.

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/precision-t5400/drivers

Also, take a quick inventory of all the USB devices plugged into your computer. Check their support websites to see if they have any software or drivers that will need to be installed to function correctly- especially if you're using a USB device you've never used before.

Hope this helps!

USB Port can preform faster error message

This is because you are plugging in a USB 2 device to a standard USB port, or a USB 3 device into a USB 2 port. The computer is just telling you that if you upgrade the hardware, the device will work faster. Its more of an information message than an error. Your device should still function fine.

Dell has stated in Dell knowledge base document FA1021802, that a USB device (such as a external hard drives, scanner, printer, etc) may not be detected or function correctly when connected to the USB port of a Dell Latitude or Inspiron PC (it may occur on other models as well).

Various communication errors may occur, including device initialization and device not found errors.
Some Dell computers do not provide enough voltage from the USB ports to power some USB devices.
Dell recommends purchasing a powered USB hub to provide the USB devices with enough power to operate correctly.

I think this explains it. Thank you and good luck!

How to map usb ports USB1, 2, etc.

You don't map the Universal Serial Buss. You just hook all the devices to the connection points (ports). The computer find them by device, MAC address, etc., not by port number. You can hook up to 127 devices to a computer, and the computer will talk to all of them regardless the physical point of connection. That's the reason, you can buy USB hubs with 4 or more connection points that plug into an USB port (how do you map that?).
USB1 - 6 is for you to know how many devices are connected to the computer via USB at a certain time.
So if your printer is configured for USB1, what ever port you plug that printer in, will be USB1.
