My DVD player on my acer will not play cd/dvd..I downloaded a new updated driver--and now it plays cd --but still will not play dvd.

When you say play DVDs you mean watch DVD movies? Assuming the drive is not broken you need to use the DVD app. You could use VLC Player which you can download. It's an orange traffic cone icon.

Try installing a new software program to play your DVDs. Also look for updated dvd player drivers from Acer site.

The DVD player may be set to a Region that does not match the Region code on the DVDs.
To changethe Region code on your DVD player, open Control Panel - System - Hardware -Device manager, and click on DVD/CD ROM drives, then right click on the DVDdrive and click Properties then click on DVD Region.
You can enter a new region and it also shows you how many changes have beenmade.
NOTE you can make only 4 changes and the player will lock permanently on the4th change.
If you want to play DVDs from any region you maybe able to upgrade the firmwareto make it region free BUT if you make a mistake or installed the wrongfirmware the player will be a piece of junk.
The best solution to make the player region free is to install a piece ofsoftware that allows you to play DVDs from any region. There are severalavailable on the Internet but my favourite is DVD-Region Free From: -

Your media player is not updated with the proper codec codes. If you can't find them for free on microsofts web page then download DivX player.

If the problem is that it just wont play or recognize DVD movie but recognizes CD then you may need to download a DVD decoder.

Windows Media Player ( depends on the version) doesn't come with DVD decoders so you may have to download it OR :

Give this a try : write a DVD at 1x speed (lowest speed) and test it on your laptop. If this works ok then either use better media or lower (e.g half) your writing speed........

IT DOESNT PLAY DVD BUT PLAY CD I HAVE A SH-M522C

Go to the Acer support site and download new audio drivers, you should also check to see if there are any other hardware drivers on their site that you need to update. I would also recommend downloading the most recent BIOS file they have available and updating your computers BIOS.
