If you have your flash set to "red-eye flash", it will fire "pre-flashes" to prevent redeye in your subjects. You can turn off that feature and set it for normal flash. As far as shutter delay is concerned, all you need to do is press the shutter button half-way and allow the camera to lock in the focus (it will beep) and then you can re-compose the picture and press the rest of the way when the moment is right.

When taking a picture there's no picture just black

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

When i push the button to take a picture, the camera delays for about 3 or 4 seconds before it actually take the pic. Why does it delay?

Hi,

There could be several problems like:

1)The focus.
2)Self timer set to 2sec or 10sec.
3)very slow shutter speed set.
Make it as a 10 or 20 second delay on the self timer .Your problem here could be that the settings are not right. Go to the menus and reset all to original or default. Then set menus the way you like. You may have a slow memory card, try changing to a faster card, and test it.

Thank you!

Wy wife and I shake a little when taking pictures and our shots are fuzzy most of the time. what can we do to improve our pictures with this SONY DSC-W55 camera?

you need to increase your shutter speed. your instruction manual should tell you how to do it. if you don't use flash normally try using it with your pictures. If you can adjust the ISO setting to a higher number as well. Some digitals will let you and others wont.

Delay when taking picture

2 things to be checked to rectify this delay.
what size of memory stick you are using. 1GB is fine, 2GB slower the camera and 4GB is more then enough.
Check memory stick, is it full with files? try to make more free space in memory stick.
perform "intialization" by selecting in camera menu.
Good luck.
