We have a 4 year old GE Side by side. The fridge side isn't getting cold at all and the freezer side is about as cold as the fridsge should be. The back of the freezer is also frosting up.
We had a friend look at it and they said that they thought the board was bad because it isn't going into defrost at all. So we replaced that yesterday morning. I used the blow dryer to defrost the back of the freezer. Once we plugged it back you could here it running nost of the day, but it never did get cold enough. Now this morning it's not running at all and it is frosting up in the back again.
Any Suggestions???? Did I maybe not defrost it enough before I plugged it back in??
Possibly you did not defrost enough but other things to check are:
does the fan operate?
maybe the defrost element open circuit or the thermal cutout in series with the element
you will need a multimeter to check the defrost heater and thermal fuse. make sure you have continuity thro them. take off the back panel inside the freezer and these components will be in view.
with back panel still off use a hairdryer to defrost. don't point too close to plastics and don't heat up any stats mounted on the evaporator. i have had it take over an hour to defrost this way - just depends how much ice is present

The fandoes operate. We are defrosting today. Someone else suggested that we take about 6 hours to do it. How do we check the other things you suggested?
