It sounds like the driver does not match the WebCam.
Uninstall the WebCam driver and WebCam
Reboot the laptop and reinstall as required.

In this case I would recommend you to please check if the camera is getting detected in device manager.
To goto Device Manager
1) if you are using XP
Right Click "My Computer" > Select Properties > Select Hardware tab from the top > Select Device manager> Check if you see the Webcam under Imaging devices
2) If using Vista / Win7
Click Start> In search type: device manager and hit enter > check if the camera is listed under imaging devices
